The 1991 Hungarian Grand Prix took place on August 11th at the Hungaroring in Mogyoród near Budapest and was the tenth race of the 1991 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

Since Johnny Herbert continued to take part in Formula 3000 races in Japan, Michael Bartels was able to make another attempt to qualify for a Grand Prix as the paydriver of a Lotus 102B . There were no other changes among the participants compared to the German Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

training

Ayrton Senna clearly qualified for pole position in front of the two Williams drivers Riccardo Patrese and Nigel Mansell , who, despite difficulties, finished second and third on the grid on Friday. Alain Prost followed ahead of Gerhard Berger , Jean Alesi and Emanuele Pirro . Behind Tyrrell pilot Stefano Modena , Ivan Capelli qualified for ninth place on the grid in the Leyton House CG911 with significantly modified front wheel suspension by the new technical director Gustav Brunner .

run

As a result of a good start, Patrese was tied with Senna in the first corner, who defended the lead with a tough maneuver. Mansell followed before Prost, Berger, Alesi and Capelli. Senna could not break away from his four direct pursuers, but in return they did not succeed in attacking the leader.

On lap 25, Alesi had new tires fitted to the pits and thus briefly fell back to eighth place. Shortly afterwards, Prost retired due to an engine failure.

When Mansell caught up with Patrese, he decided to let his team-mate, who was promisingly positioned in the world championship, pass to give him the chance to attack Senna. Despite a few quick laps, the British did not succeed. So Senna won ahead of Mansell, Patrese, Berger, Alesi and Capelli.

For the first and only time, Bertrand Gachot drove the fastest race lap of a Grand Prix, which was also the first for Team Jordan .
