The 1991 Belgian Grand Prix took place on August 25th at the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps near Spa and was the eleventh race of the 1991 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
In the run-up to the eleventh World Cup run of the season, Bertrand Gachot was arrested in Great Britain for spraying a taxi driver with irritant gas. In the search for a short-term replacement driver, after mediation by Willi Weber and Jochen Neerpasch, the German debutant Michael Schumacher was signed for a race at Jordan .
Lotus pilot Johnny Herbert returned to the field instead of Michael Bartels .
training
Due to bumps in the area of the newly paved Blanchimont curve, the suspension of Gabriele Tarquini's AGS JH25B broke during the pre-qualification on Friday morning , which led to a serious accident. The local pilot Eric van de Poele lost control of his Lambo 291 for similar reasons during the first free practice and crashed into the track barrier so hard that he had to be treated in hospital. However, he already took part in the second regular qualification training on Saturday.
Ayrton Senna secured pole position with a lap less than one second, ahead of Alain Prost , Nigel Mansell , Gerhard Berger , Jean Alesi and Nelson Piquet . Michael Schumacher immediately impressed by qualifying for seventh place on the grid on the course, which was almost unknown to him at the time. Roberto Moreno followed before Pierluigi Martini and Stefano Modena .
run
Senna took the lead ahead of Prost, Mansell, Piquet, Berger and the poorly started Alesi. For Schumacher, who had set the fourth fastest lap time in the warm-up in the morning , the race ended after a few hundred meters due to a damaged clutch.
Shortly after Mansell had overtaken Prost on the second lap, he retired again due to an engine failure on his Ferrari 643 .
The Williams team managed to change tires faster than the McLaren pit crew , so Mansell left the pit lane as the leader on lap 15. Alesi, who again completed the race without a pit stop, briefly dueled Mansell for the top position, but then fell back slightly and came under pressure from Senna. As a result of an electrical fault on Mansell's Williams FW14 , Alesi took the lead on lap 21. An unscheduled pit stop by Sennas also gave him a certain lead. Riccardo Patrese , Nelson Piquet and Andrea de Cesaris were involved in a three-way battle for third place.
When Alesis' engine failed, as did that of his teammate a few laps before, Senna took the lead again. De Cesaris, who had recently passed Piquet, followed in second place and caught up with Senna. By closely following the leader, the engine temperature of de Cesaris' Jordan 191 rose rapidly, which ultimately led to engine failure on lap 42. The second-placed Patrese was unable to catch up with Senna due to transmission problems, but was overtaken by Berger, who thus produced a McLaren double lead. The two Benetton drivers Piquet and Moreno also overtook Patrese, who ultimately came in fifth. Mark Blundell scored the first championship point of the season for himself and for Team Brabham in sixth place .
For the first and only time, Roberto Moreno completed the fastest race lap of a Grand Prix.
