The 1991 British Grand Prix took place at Silverstone on July 14th and was the eighth race of the 1991 Formula 1 World Championship .

Reports

background

An unchanged field of participants compared to the French Grand Prix , which had taken place the previous weekend, started on the traditional Silverstone course, which had been modified by several new curve combinations.

training

The Williams driver Nigel Mansell , who was second in the World Championship at the time , prevailed in the duel for pole position against McLaren driver Ayrton Senna, who was clearly ahead of the points . They were followed by their two team mates Riccardo Patrese and Gerhard Berger in front of the two Ferraris of Alain Prost and Jean Alesi and the two Benettons of Roberto Moreno and Nelson Piquet .

run

Senna was initially able to take the lead thanks to Mansell's bad start. By briefly deactivating the rev limiter, Mansell countered successfully during the first lap on the Hangar Straight . Patrese had to end the race due to a collision with Berger in the first corner. Berger was able to continue the race, but was initially in fourth place behind Moreno. He overtook this on lap four. After a pit stop he dropped to sixth place on lap 24, but within eight laps he made it back to fourth place behind Mansell, Senna and Prost. Another nine laps later he passed Prost.

On lap 41 Andrea de Cesaris had a serious accident lying in a promising position in the Abbey curve, but survived the accident unharmed.

As Senna was eliminated on the last lap due to lack of fuel, Berger finished second behind the victorious Mansell, who scored a hat trick . Prost took third place ahead of Senna, who was classified fourth due to the distance he had covered. Nelson Piquet and Bertrand Gachot finished fifth and sixth.

During his lap of honor Mansell took the eliminated Senna to the Parc Fermé in the side box of his car .
