Reports
background
An exceptionally large field of 29 drivers was registered for the British Grand Prix. These included Roger Williamson in the works March , Jochen Mass in a third Surtees works car, John Watson in a fourth Brabham and Graham McRae in a second car from Frank Williams Racing Cars, four Formula 1 debutants.
Although McLaren regular driver Peter Revson returned to the team, his representative Jody Scheckter also received a third works car thanks to his good performance in previous appearances.
Jean-Pierre Jarier took a break at his own request and was replaced on the March factory team by Roger Williamson, while Mike Beuttler , James Hunt and David Purley each took part again in March on the race weekend for private purposes.
Chris Amon returned to the field at the wheel of the only factory Tecno .
training
The winner of the previous French Grand Prix , Ronnie Peterson , secured pole position. The two McLaren of Denis Hulme and Peter Revson followed in the next places in the front row . Behind them, the World Cup opponents Jackie Stewart and Emerson Fittipaldi qualified for the second row.
Jochen Mass qualified as the best of the four newcomers for the fourteenth place on the grid.
run
David Purley decided not to take part in the race after a training accident.
Hindered by a gearbox failure at the start, Niki Lauda was rammed by Jackie Oliver , who was not able to react quickly enough and dodge when coming from behind. Both vehicles were initially eliminated from the race.
Meanwhile, Peterson had converted his pole position into a lead, but lost that position to Stewart within the first lap. Behind them was Carlos Reutemann , who, after a good start from eighth place, was ahead of Scheckter and Hulme.
At the end of the first lap, Scheckter lost control of his vehicle in the area of the Woodcote curve and spun into the pit wall. His car bounced back onto the track while some pursuers approached the spot as a dense group. Nine vehicles were then involved in the largest pile-up in Formula 1 history to date. Graham Hill was the only one involved who was initially able to continue because his vehicle was only slightly damaged. However, since the track was almost completely blocked and rescue workers had to get to the partially trapped drivers, the race management decided for the first time in history to interrupt a Grand Prix. Fortunately, Andrea de Adamich , who had broken his legs, turned out to be the only seriously injured person. After 90 minutes of clean-up work, the race could be restarted, with only 19 drivers left with intact vehicles.
Niki Lauda's car, which had been damaged at the first start, had meanwhile been repaired so that the Austrian could participate in the restart. His opponent Jackie Oliver, however, could no longer compete. Due to an empty grid position in front of him, Lauda made a good start that put him in second place behind Peterson and ahead of Stewart, Fittipaldi and Revson.
On the second lap, Lauda was overtaken by Stewart and finally on the seventh by Fittipaldi. At the same time, Stewart was spinning due to a transmission problem. In the following laps, Lauda kept falling back, being overtaken one after the other by Revson, Hulme, Hunt , Cevert and Reutemann. The order then remained constant until Emerson Fittipaldi had to retire on lap 37 due to a transmission problem. This failure put Revson in the position to duel with Peterson for the lead. In the 39th lap he won this duel and kept the lead just to the finish, with which he secured his first Grand Prix victory.
Once again, James Hunt caused a sensation. He moved up to third place and dueled Peterson for second place. The aggressive driving style required for this, however, caused heavy tire wear, so that Hunt was fourth behind Hulme in the end.
