The 1988 British Grand Prix took place at Silverstone on July 10th and was the eighth race of the 1988 Formula 1 World Championship .

With regard to the field of participants, there was no change compared to the French Grand Prix the weekend before.

For the first time in the current season, it was not a McLaren who took pole position, but Gerhard Berger , who shared the front row with his teammate Michele Alboreto . Only behind followed were Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost , who had dominated all training sessions to date, ahead of the two March pilots Maurício Gugelmin and Ivan Capelli .

While Berger was able to defend the lead in the rain, Alboreto was overtaken by Senna shortly after the start. Prost lost several positions and finally gave up on lap 24. The reason for this he gave the poor handling of the car.
Senna won after taking the lead from Berger on lap 14. Nigel Mansell fought his way up to second place, much to the delight of the local spectators. Alessandro Nannini completed the podium in third in front of Maurício Gugelmin, Nelson Piquet and Derek Warwick .
