There was no Canadian Grand Prix in the 1987 season . During this time, a new pit area was built and several curves were modified.
With regard to the field of participants, there was no change compared to the Mexican Grand Prix two weeks earlier.

Derek Warwick had a serious accident during training, which he survived uninjured.
As on all previous race weekends of the year, Ayrton Senna secured pole position. On the second place followed by his McLaren -Teamkollege Alain Prost ahead of the two Ferrari pilots Gerhard Berger and Michele Alboreto . Alessandro Nannini and Nelson Piquet formed the third row on the grid.

Prost took the lead with a better start than Senna. The Brazilian followed in second place, ahead of Berger and Alboreto. In the 19th lap he took the lead and defended this position to the finish. Shortly before that, Benetton driver Thierry Boutsen had passed both Ferraris into third place.
Since both both Ferrari drivers could not finish and the second Benetton driver Nannini the race due to technical difficulties, Nelson Piquet finished fourth before the end Ivan Capelli and Jonathan Palmer .
