The 1981 Canadian Grand Prix took place in Montreal on September 27 and was the 14th race of the 1981 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
After the Italian Grand Prix , reigning world champion Alan Jones announced that he would end his Formula 1 career at the end of the season. The same was expected of Mario Andretti . In the meantime, Niki Lauda , who had resigned in 1979 , had been observed doing secret test drives for McLaren in Donington , so that the first rumors of a comeback of the Austrian emerged.
Siegfried Stohr ended his racing career with immediate effect and was then replaced at Arrows by Jacques Villeneuve senior , the brother of Gilles Villeneuve and uncle of the future Formula 1 world champion Jacques Villeneuve .
training
The two main competitors in the fight for the world title, Nelson Piquet and Carlos Reutemann , qualified for the front row ahead of Alan Jones and Alain Prost . The third row was formed by Nigel Mansell and Héctor Rebaque .
As it was raining heavily on the day of the race, in contrast to the two training days, an additional free practice session was carried out before the race so that the drivers and their vehicles could adapt themselves and their vehicles to the changed conditions.
run
In heavy rain, Jones, who started from third place, immediately took the lead. In order to avoid a collision with his team mate, Reutemann, who started from second place, had to take off the gas, which meant that he lost three more places to Piquet, Prost and Elio de Angelis . Further back in the field, Gilles Villeneuve triggered a spin from René Arnoux , who was eliminated.
By the seventh lap, Villeneuve fought his way up to third place. This was facilitated, among other things, by the fact that Jones spun in the sixth lap and Piquet lost several places through an abrupt evasive maneuver. Alain Prost was initially ahead of Jacques Laffite until he took the lead on lap 13. Prost dropped to fourth place behind Gilles Villeneuve and John Watson over the next two laps .
On lap 38, Villeneuve was overtaken by Watson. Thereupon nothing changed in the order of the podium finishers. Behind them, Bruno Giacomelli , Nelson Piquet and Elio de Angelis reached the finish line when the race was stopped prematurely after 63 laps because the maximum allowed time of two hours had been reached.
Jacques Laffite's victory turned out to be the last success for Ligier until the Monaco Grand Prix in 1996 .
Reutemann traveled to Las Vegas for the season finale with just one point ahead of Piquet .
