Reports
background
The attempt by the Lotus team to circumvent the new rule, which required a ground clearance of at least six centimeters for racing cars, failed again because the new Lotus 88 with double chassis was not approved. In protest, team boss Colin Chapman left the race track before the first training session began. The Brabham BT49C , in which a hydraulic system had been installed, with which the car could be lowered while driving, was classified as compliant with the rules, since the required distance was always maintained during the measurements in the Parc Fermé .
Carlos Reutemann's decision to ignore the stall order at the previous Brazilian Grand Prix led to conflicts within the Williams team. The reigning world champion Alan Jones insisted on his contractually guaranteed number one status.
McLaren driver John Watson completed the first Grand Prix outing of a McLaren racing car with the designation MP4 this weekend . This is due to the merger of McLaren International with Project 4 of the new team boss Ron Dennis and has since been used in all of the team's Formula 1 racing cars.
training
Nelson Piquet qualified for pole position from Alain Prost . The two Williams drivers Jones and Reutemann formed the second row in front of René Arnoux in the second Renault and Héctor Rebaque in the second Brabham.
Jean-Pierre Jabouille intended to contest a race for the first time since his serious accident at the 1980 Canadian Grand Prix , but failed to qualify.
run
Although Jones was initially able to take the lead, he was overtaken by Piquet on the first lap, who from then on did not give up the top position.
On the second lap, Jones was overtaken by his team-mate Reutemann and a little later fell behind Prost and Rebaque. In the eleventh lap, Rebaque managed to complete Piquet's top position to a Brabham double lead by overtaking Prost and previously against Reutemann. However, on lap 33 he retired due to a technical defect.
Behind Piquet and Reutemann, Alain Prost achieved his first podium in Formula 1. Jones took fourth place ahead of René Arnoux. Elio de Angelis reached the goal after a duel with Riccardo Patrese in sixth.
