Reports
background
The two final races of the 1980 season, which were held on the North American continent, were dominated by the duel for the World Championship between Alan Jones and Nelson Piquet , which at that time were only one point apart in the World Championship table.
After Vittorio Brambilla's surprising withdrawal after the Italian Grand Prix , the Alfa Romeo factory team hired his compatriot Andrea de Cesaris as a replacement. Another newcomer this weekend was Kevin Cogan , who drove a second Williams FW07B from the private RAM Racing team . With Derek Warwick a third newcomer was available at Arrows in the event that Jochen Mass would still not have been able to participate due to an injury. But the German had recovered from his injuries to the point that he could start again.
Tyrrell used a third works car for Mike Thackwell , who had already tried to qualify as a replacement for Mass im Arrows at the Dutch Grand Prix . Lotus , however, returned to the regular line-up with two vehicles and renounced the use of the third car for Nigel Mansell . The second Ensign for Geoff Lees was also no longer there .
training
During the second qualification training on Saturday, all pilots undercut their respective lap times of the previous day.
In line with the situation in the World Cup, the two duelists Piquet and Jones qualified for the front row, with the Brazilian leading, as was the case at this point in the World Cup. Didier Pironi and Bruno Giacomelli formed the second row in front of Carlos Reutemann and Keke Rosberg .
The vehicles with Michelin tires were all on the rear starting positions. The non-qualification of the reigning world champion Jody Scheckter , who had already announced his retirement at the end of the season, was the negative climax of an unsatisfactory season for him and the Ferrari team .
run
Jones got off his starting position better than Piquet, who started from pole position. However, he fought against the Australian as much as possible, which ultimately led to a collision between the two. While Jones was able to continue the race, in addition to Piquets Brabham, seven other vehicles were involved in the collision, namely the Tyrrells of Derek Daly and Jean-Pierre Jarier , the two Fittipaldis of Keke Rosberg and Emerson Fittipaldi , and those of Mario Andretti , Gilles Villeneuve and Jochen Mass piloted the car. The race was canceled because the damaged cars could not be removed quickly enough.
The field formed for a new start, in which Piquet, Fittipaldi, Villeneuve, Andretti and Mass also took part in their T-Cars . Rosberg started his hastily repaired vehicle from the pit lane. Jarier took over the car from guest starter Thackwell, who a few minutes earlier had taken part in a Grand Prix start as the youngest driver at the time, thus setting a record that was only broken by Jaime Alguersuari at the 2009 Hungarian Grand Prix .
Jones won the second start again. Pironi also moved past Piquet into second place. By the third lap, however, the Brazilian fought his way back to the top. He defended this position until the 24th round. Then he had to retire due to an engine failure, which brought Jones back to the lead.
On lap 26, Jean-Pierre Jabouille had a serious accident due to a suspension defect. He had to be cut out of his destroyed car and suffered serious leg injuries.
Alain Prost , who started in midfield, had fought his way up to fourth place by the 34th lap. However, suspension damage threw him out of the race on lap 42.
Due to an early start, Pironi received a subsequent penalty minute. Jones crossed the finish line in second, less than a minute behind the French, as did Carlos Reutemann in third. As a result, Jones was declared the winner ahead of Reutemann and Pironi. Due to the cancellation rules in effect at the time, Piquet could not catch up on Jones' lead in the final run in Watkins Glen. The Australian was the new world champion.
