Reports
background
Marlboro, the previous main sponsor of McLaren , announced internally after the Spanish Grand Prix in 1996 that they would end their cooperation with McLaren after this season. This is the end of a 22-year partnership due to McLaren's unsuccessfulness , as it will later be called.
Qualifying
The qualifying decided Damon Hill ahead of Jacques Villeneuve and Michael Schumacher in his favor.
run
During the pre-start, the engine of the Ferrari of Schumacher, who was third in qualifying, did not start due to insufficient fuel pressure. For this reason, due to a loss of time, he had to start the race from 22nd and last place instead of third after completing the introductory lap.
From the start to the 27th lap, Brite Hill was in the lead. From the 28th lap to the 35th lap, his team-mate Villeneuve led the field, before Hill drove the race in first place again from lap 36 and defended his place until the end of the race after 305.049 kilometers. Villeneuve completed the fastest lap of the race in 1: 21.916 minutes on lap 67. This meant an average speed of 194.291 km / h. Michael Schumacher, who initially had to struggle with unregulated braking balance due to rear-end vibrations and then with decreasing engine power over the entire race distance, had already retired on lap 43 when he lost the drive shaft after a pit stop.
