background
Between the Italian Grand Prix and the penultimate World Championship round of the year in Canada, the Dino Ferrari Grand Prix , which is not part of the World Championship, took place in Imola . Niki Lauda , who had a frustrating season with a yield of only four championship points, won the race. During training for the Canadian Grand Prix, he finally announced his retirement from Formula 1 with immediate effect after having only driven a few laps with the new Brabham BT49 . Team boss Bernie Ecclestone then selected the Argentinian debutant Ricardo Zunino as a substitute driver. The collaboration between Alfa Romeo and Brabham , which had existed since 1976 , had also come to an end. The Ford Cosworth engine was chosen for the new car , which was still used by most of the teams.
At Tyrrell , the decision was made to the two overseas races that made up the end of the season, each a third factory car for Derek Daly to register. Emerson Fittipaldi also added a vehicle to his team , which was occupied by Alex Ribeiro .
After only one copy of the new Alfa Romeo 179 was used in Monza , the Autodelta team originally planned to equip both factory drivers in Canada with the new vehicle. However, since the team refused to participate in a pre-qualification, the report was rejected. After protests, one of the two drivers, Vittorio Brambilla, was allowed to take part in the race weekend.
training
Alan Jones drove the fastest training lap and qualified for the pole position alongside local hero Gilles Villeneuve . This was followed by Clay Regazzoni in the second Williams alongside Nelson Piquet in the new Brabham. Jacques Laffite and Didier Pironi shared the third row in front of their two compatriots Jean-Pierre Jabouille and René Arnoux . Jody Scheckter , who is already the new world champion, and last year's world champion, Mario Andretti , completed the top ten.
run
Villeneuve took the lead ahead of Jones and Regazzoni. The Swiss was overtaken by Piquet on the eighth lap.
Villeneuve failed to break away from Jones. He overtook him on lap 51 in the tight hairpin and then defended the top position until the finish line, albeit without clearly setting himself apart from his opponent. By the 57th lap, Piquet drove in third place. Then he retired due to a gearbox failure and had to give Regazzoni the podium.
Registration list
1 Ricardo Zunino took over the number 5 Brabham BT49 during practice from Niki Lauda.
