training

René Arnoux achieved the first pole position of his Formula 1 career with the turbo-powered Renault RS10 . He relegated Alan Jones , the winner of the previous race, to second place. He was followed by Jean-Pierre Jabouille, the second Renault works driver alongside Niki Lauda . Gilles Villeneuve and Clay Regazzoni formed the third row on the grid.

run

After a very good start, Villeneuve took the lead from Jones, Lauda and Arnoux. Jabouille, who had dropped to ninth position shortly after the race was released due to clutch problems, fought his way back up to second place by lap 13. At this point, the leader was no longer Villeneuve, but Jones, who had overtaken the Canadian on lap four.

When Jabouille's clutch finally failed on lap 15, his compatriot and team-mate Arnoux took second place from him. Five laps before the end of the race, however, he had to go to the pits due to a lack of fuel and thus dropped to sixth place. Behind the renewed winner Jones and second placed Villeneuve, Jacques Laffite finished third after overtaking Jody Scheckter on the last lap . Regazzoni crossed the finish line in fifth.
