Reports
background
The Willi Kauhsen Racing Team had declared its Formula 1 involvement over after two unsuccessful Grand Prix weekends. Its driver Gianfranco Brancatelli then switched to Team Merzario to represent the injured team founder Arturo Merzario . The Alfa Romeo factory team Autodelta and the private team Rebaque were also not present .
training
As only 20 starters were admitted to the race, it was decided to carry out a pre-qualification on Thursday morning, in which Hans-Joachim Stuck , Jochen Mass and Gianfranco Brancatelli had to take part. For the latter, this meant the end of his short Formula 1 career.
Four other non-participants were identified during regular training. Among them was McLaren driver Patrick Tambay for the second time in a row .
The two Ferrari regular drivers Jody Scheckter and Gilles Villeneuve qualified this time for the front row ahead of Patrick Depailler , who had already started from second place four times in the Ligier this season. His team-mate Jacques Laffite , who had pole position in each of these four cases, followed behind Niki Lauda in fifth. The two Tyrrell drivers Jean-Pierre Jarier and Didier Pironi qualified for positions six and seven with identical lap times. Jochen Mass made a strong impression in the Arrows as eighth.
The Lotus pilots found themselves unusually far back . Carlos Reutemann reached eleventh place with the Lotus 79 , his team mate Mario Andretti , who dared another attempt with the new, controversial Lotus 80 , qualified for 13th place on the grid.
run
In the leading group, Lauda had the best start, which brought him to second place behind Scheckter and ahead of Villeneuve and Depailler, even before the Sainte Dévote . In the third lap, Villeneuve was able to regain second place from Lauda and then caught up with his team-mate Scheckter who was at the top. Meanwhile, Lauda came under pressure from Depailler, Laffite, Pironi and Jones.
On lap 16, Pironi crashed into Laffite's stern, which meant that the Ligier driver had to stop for repairs. Three laps later, Pironi collided with Depailler's second ligier in the tight Loews hairpin. The race was over for him. When Pironi finally tried to overtake Lauda on lap 22, there was another collision. This time both pilots involved dropped out.
Alan Jones , who benefited from the collisions in front of him, was in third place until lap 43. Then, however, he was eliminated due to a defective steering. Jochen Mass, who subsequently came third, also fell back on lap 49 due to a technical problem and had to leave third place to Clay Regazzoni .
When Villeneuve retired on the 54th lap due to a gearbox failure, Scheckter was initially the undisputed leader. However, since a transmission problem also hampered him, Regazzoni was able to catch up significantly in the final phase. In the end, Scheckter narrowly secured his second win of the season. As Depailler retired with engine failure shortly before the end, John Watson achieved fourth place behind Carlos Reutemann. Depailler was classified fifth due to the distance he covered. Jochen Mass finished sixth, seven laps behind the winner, and received the last championship point of the day. Apart from the six points placed, Jean-Pierre Jabouille was the only one to cross the finish line. However, due to the fact that he was too far behind, he was not rated.
