training
Thursday training
Mika Häkkinen set the fastest time with 1: 21.937 ahead of Fisichella and Coulthard. Michael Schumacher was almost two seconds behind Häkkinen in fifth place.
All drivers were placed within seven seconds.
Saturday training
A non-McLaren driver set the fastest time for a long time, with Fisichella being around a second ahead of Coulthard and Mika Salo the fastest. Häkkinen couldn't convince with seventh place and Michael Schumacher couldn't take part in the session.
All drivers were placed within eight seconds.
Qualifying
Hakkinen was able to take the lead again with a 1: 19.798, followed by Coulthard, Fisichella and Schumacher. Mika Salo surprisingly managed to secure eighth place. As at the last race weekend , Ricardo Rosset was again unable to qualify within the 107 percent time . He failed to qualify by 0.354 seconds. While trying to get a faster qualifying time, he destroyed his car so badly that the FIA gave Rosset a warning about dangerous driving. The angry mechanics then changed the first with the last letter of a name tag to form the word " tosser ".
All qualifying drivers were placed within four and a half seconds.
Warm-up
Häkkinen again set the fastest time with 1: 23.878 ahead of Michael Schumacher, David Coulthard and Alexander Wurz. Mika Salo, who was able to draw attention to himself in qualifying, took sixth place. Rosset was not allowed to participate in the session because he could not qualify for the race the day before.
All drivers were placed within four and a half seconds.
run
A perfect start by Häkkinen helped him get out of the first corner ahead of Coulthard. Only Alexander Wurz and Pedro Diniz were able to gain positions at the start. In the first lap there was the first retirement with Esteban Tuero, because he crashed into the guardrail.
In the early stages of the race, both McLaren drivers were able to consistently expand their lead, each setting twelve fastest race laps in a row. Meanwhile, Irvine tried to get past Frentzen on lap ten. He dared a maneuver in the hairpin, which ended in a disaster for the Williams pilot. Frentzen noticed the approaching chaos, left room, but Irvine could not avoid it and pushed the German into the guardrails, whereupon he had to give up because of a broken handlebar. When Coulthard was about to set a new fastest lap on lap 17, his engine gave up in second place in the tunnel.
On lap 29, Häkkinen made a slight mistake that almost cost his first place, because in the Rasscasse corner he lightly hit the wall with his left rear tire. He was able to continue, but for a long time there was fear that his suspension might be damaged. In the next lap, Michael Schumacher was the first to pick up new fuel and tires. One lap later, Fisichella also pitted, but Schumacher was able to come back onto the track before him. On lap 37 Schumacher tried to overtake Wurz in the hairpin, but the Austrian didn't give up. The two touched and Schumacher was able to slip forward, but in the next corner Wurz countered and the two touched again, and before the tunnel entrance Schumacher finally came back in front of the Benetton driver, but for the third time there was contact with each other. The Ferrari driver had to go to the pits where he was about to give up, but the Ferrari pit crew quickly exchanged the wishbone that had been damaged by the many hits, whereupon Schumacher was able to resume the race after three laps of standing still. Wurz remained unscathed for the time being, but then flew violently a little later due to a broken suspension at the tunnel exit. Like Karl Wendlinger, he hit the race weekend in 1994 , but was uninjured.
With a few laps to go, Häkkinen slowed down noticeably due to transmission problems, but he was able to bring his lead over the finish line. On lap 78, Schumacher tore off his front wing in the hairpin while trying to overtake Pedro Diniz, who was in sixth place, for the last point.
