Ralf Schumacher, David Coulthard, Jacques Villeneuve and Heinz-Harald Frentzen followed. All drivers were placed within six seconds, with about one and a half seconds between the last Rosset and the penultimate Panis.
Qualifying
Unlike in the previous sessions, Ferrari occupied the front row, with Michael Schumacher three tenths ahead of Eddie Irvine. They were followed by Mika Häkkinen, Giancarlo Fisichella, David Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher. All drivers were placed within four and a half seconds, Rosset beat the 107 percent time limit by over one and a half seconds.
Warm-up
In the warm-up before the race, Mika Häkkinen was the fastest driver in front of his team mate David Coulthard, followed by the two Ferraris with Michael Schumacher and Eddie Irvine as well as Alexander Wurz and Jacques Villeneuve. All drivers were placed within five seconds.
run
At the start Irvine overtook Schumacher and led the race to the last corner when Schumacher regained the lead. Irvine was now starting to stop Häkkinen for his teammate. Esteban Tuero rolled back into the pits on the first lap after the drive shaft broke. The team repaired the damage so Tuero could start the race again. However, he retired on the 56th lap due to an engine failure. On the 14th lap, Häkkinen was able to overtake Irvine in the Veedol chicane and now shorten the gap to the leading Schumacher. On lap 24, Schumacher pits to refuel, while Häkkinen stopped four laps later. This decision turned out to be the right one, as Häkkinen came out of the pits just ahead of Schumacher and maintained the lead despite strong pressure. After the next series of pit stops, Häkkinen increased the gap to Schumacher and won the race by almost two seconds.
