Michael Schumacher only reached tenth place, about a second behind. All drivers were placed within nine and a half seconds.

Michael Schumacher took pole position with a time of 1: 26.289 minutes, followed by Jacques Villeneuve, Mika Häkkinen, David Coulthard and Eddie Irvine. Häkkinen was four tenths of a second behind Schumacher. All drivers were placed within four seconds, the last placed Esteban Tuero beat the 107 percent time limit by around two seconds.
Warm-up
With a time of 1: 25.632 minutes, David Coulthard was the fastest driver in the warm-up, followed by Mika Häkkinen, Michael Schumacher and Toranosuke Takagi in the Tyrrell. All drivers were placed within four and a half seconds.
run
Häkkinen got off to a good start, overtaking Eddie Irvine and Michael Schumacher and taking the lead, while Schumacher dropped to fifth place. However, Schumacher soon overtook Villeneuve and Irvine and moved up to third place. During the race, Häkkinen's car developed braking problems, after which he gave Coulthard the lead, but his engine failed a little later. Häkkinen tried to compensate for the problems by shifting the braking force distribution forward. A little later, however, his competitor for the world championship, Michael Schumacher, took the lead after Häkkinen had slowed down. Häkkinen was initially able to keep up with Schumacher, he was only three seconds behind. He spun off the track in the Roggia chicane when his rear brakes finally failed. Still, he finished fourth. Ferrari scored a double victory in the home race with Michael Schumacher in first place, followed by Eddie Irvine and his brother Ralf Schumacher. It was the first time that the Schumacher brothers stood together on the podium. With this victory, Michael Schumacher achieved the same number of points as Mika Häkkinen, namely 80.
