The 1987 Italian Grand Prix took place in Monza on September 6th and was the eleventh race of the 1987 Formula 1 World Championship .
Reports
background
The new Coloni team competed in a Grand Prix for the first time this weekend. The debutant Nicola Larini was used as the driver . For him, as well as for the team, it was the home race. The UK-based Middlebridge-Trussardi team, which had entered a Benetton B186 with a Megatron engine for Emanuele Pirro , was also set to make its debut in the race. However, the report was rejected due to irregularities. Middlebridge ultimately did not run.
With Franco Forini , another racing driver made his Formula 1 debut. He piloted a second Osella , which increased the field of training participants to 28. Since the starter field was still limited to 26 pilots at the time, it was clear from the start that two pilots would fail at the qualification hurdle.
As a result of the announcement by Honda that the Williams team would no longer be equipped with engines from the 1988 season , rumors arose that they might support Nelson Piquet in the fight for the world championship against his teammate Nigel Mansell , as Piquet had already decided to join the team Lotus would continue to be a Honda rider. The engine manufacturer denied these claims.
An active suspension was tested for the first time this weekend in the vehicle of the Brazilian Piquet, who is leading in the World Cup . Mansell waived this and contested the Grand Prix with a conventionally equipped car.
training
Piquet secured pole position just ahead of his team-mate. Gerhard Berger and Ayrton Senna followed in the second row in front of the reigning world champion Alain Prost and Thierry Boutsen .
Forini was able to qualify as 26th and last. The second newcomer Larini, however, like Pascal Fabre, had to forego participating in the race.
run
Mansell initially took the lead with a good start, but had to leave this position to his team-mate due to a shifting error before the first corner. Berger followed before Boutsen, Prost and Senna. In the course of an attempt to overtake Berger collided with Mansell on the second lap. As a result, the two fell back to third and fourth place behind Boutsen.
Mansell managed to overtake Berger on the 17th lap. Two laps later, after a successful overtaking maneuver against Boutsen, he restored a Williams one-two lead.
While most of the opponents made a pit stop around the middle of the race distance, Senna fell by the wayside and thus took the lead. His strategy was to go through without changing tires, which could have been the key to victory. However, he had an accident on lap 43 in the course of a lapping maneuver against Piercarlo Ghinzani and was able to continue the race, but from then on he was in second place behind Piquet. During the remaining seven laps he tried to catch up with his compatriot and push him back from the front. However, the tires, which had meanwhile been too worn, no longer allowed this. Mansell crossed the finish line in third, ahead of Berger and Boutsen. Stefan Johansson received the last World Championship point of the day in sixth place.
