Reports
background
Without the consent of the Jordan team, which believed they had a valid contract with Michael Schumacher , his management secretly negotiated with Benetton to commit the driver, who had made his Formula 1 debut in Belgium two weeks earlier , for the remainder of the current season and beyond. The result of these negotiations was a driver swap between the two teams, with Schumacher being substituted for Roberto Moreno . Jordan was forced to agree to this process.
Instead of Johnny Herbert , Michael Bartels returned to the field of potential participants.
training
Ayrton Senna qualified for pole position in front of his most promising rival in the world championship, Nigel Mansell . The respective teammates of the two, Gerhard Berger and Riccardo Patrese , followed in the second row ahead of the two Ferrari pilots Alain Prost and Jean Alesi and the two Benetton B191 by Michael Schumacher and Nelson Piquet . Roberto Moreno, who took over from Jordan, shared the fifth row with Pierluigi Martini in the Minardi M191 . Prequalifier Mark Blundell achieved eleventh place on the grid with the slightly modified Brabham BT60Y .
run
Senna took the lead from Mansell and Berger. Shortly after Alesi had won the starting duel against his team-mate Prost, he had to go to the pits for repairs to his car due to a collision in the first corner with Patrese. Moreno, who was hoping to be able to quickly overtake the two vehicles of his former team in front of him, spun out on the first lap due to a brake defect.
In the seventh lap, Patrese took third place from Berger. On lap 19 he passed his teammate Mansell. In the Ascari chicane he succeeded in lap 26, ousting Senna from the lead. In the same place, however, he turned in the following lap. Although he was initially able to continue the race in fourth place, he had to retire after a few meters due to a gearbox failure.
After Mansell had overtaken the leading Senna on lap 34, he immediately headed for the pits to have fresh tires fitted. He returned to the track in fifth. Past Schumacher, Berger and Prost, Senna found her way back to second place by the 46th lap.
Mansell won after 53 laps from Senna, Prost, Berger, Schumacher and Piquet. Schumacher thus secured his first two World Championship points at his second Grand Prix.
