The Ferrari 643 was a Formula 1 racing car with which Scuderia Ferrari took part in the 1991 Formula 1 World Championship . The car was designed by Steve Nichols, Jean-Claude Migeot, Paolo Massai and Luigi Mazzola.
Technology and development
After the test drives in winter, Ferrari was one of the closest favorites. In the 1991 Formula 1 World Championship , however, the car was inferior to McLaren and Williams . After team boss Cesare Fiorio had been fired and Alain Prost had reproached the team responsible Claudio Lombardi , Piero Ferrari and Marco Piccinini , he was replaced by Gianni Morbidelli . The V-12 engine (65 degrees cylinder bank angle ) in the cast iron block (125 kg) turned around 14,800 rpm and developed around 735 hp (540 kW). The car had a tank volume of 215 l and weighed a total of 505 kg. Ferrari built the seven-speed semi-automatic gearbox itself. Five chassis from the Ferrari 643 were built in Maranello .
driver
The drivers Alain Prost and Jean Alesi regularly placed in the top three. But they did not manage to win. For the first time since 1986 Ferrari did not win a Grand Prix in Formula 1. Test driver Gianni Morbidelli replaced the dismissed Alain Prost in the season finale and finished sixth in the Australian Grand Prix .
Painting and sponsorship
The cars were painted in traditional Ferrari red .
