The Ferrari F2004 was the 37th Formula 1 race car of the Scuderia Ferrari . With this vehicle, the team contested all 18 rounds of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2004 as well as the first two races of the Formula 1 World Championship in 2005 .

presentation

The presentation of the Ferrari F2004 took place on January 26, 2004 at Ferrari's headquarters in Maranello in front of around 700 guests. During the presentation, Ross Brawn described the F2004 as "the best Ferrari we have ever built."

The first test drive by Michael Schumacher followed that same week on Ferrari's in-house race track in Fiorano . With the completion of the second chassis in early February, further tests followed in Fiorano, Mugello and Imola .

Livery and sponsors

The paintwork did not change compared to the F2003-GA. As usual, the F2004 was painted in Rosso Corsa .

The main sponsor was the tobacco company Philip Morris , which advertised its Marlboro brand on the engine cover, the rear wing and other small areas. Only in the races in Canada, the USA, France and Great Britain did these areas remain white due to the ban on tobacco advertising . The telecommunications provider Vodafone also advertised on the nose of the vehicle, the front wing and the side pods. A smaller sponsor was AMD with areas on the sides of the rear wing. In addition, the outfitters and suppliers Shell , Bridgestone , Magneti Marelli , Brembo , Mahle and SKF as well as the Ferrari parent company Fiat advertised with smaller stickers.

Development and technology

The Ferrari F2004 was designed and developed by Rory Byrne , Ross Brawn and Aldo Costa . It was the last vehicle of the so-called "Dream Team" from Ferrari under Jean Todt .

The F2004 already proved to be very fast during the tests leading up to the season. The lap times were sometimes up to two seconds below those achieved with the previous year's car. For this reason, the engineers had doubts about the speed and initially believed in incorrectly adjusted measuring instruments or a car that was too light. However, even after hours of analysis, Ferrari could not explain the speed. Based on previous simulations, Ferrari assumed it was only half a second faster than last year. The team was only convinced by the performance in the last test before the season and in comparison with the other teams.

chassis

The F2004 was based on the world championship car of 2003 , the F2003-GA , and on the same design principles as the F2002 . When developing the F2004, the engineers therefore concentrated on the weaknesses of the F2003-GA and refined its concept. In order to improve the performance, every area of ​​the vehicle has been redesigned.

The front of the vehicle has changed little compared to the previous year. The nose was shorter and deeper. The only noticeable difference was the grown barchboards.

The exhaust system has also been redesigned. The exhaust pipes were now closer to the center line of the vehicle, making the vehicle narrower in the rear. There were numerous new wings and air control elements in the rear area. In addition, the tank has been reduced to a capacity of around 115 liters, as people would tend to pit more often in the 2004 season than in previous years.

The main problem with the F2003-GA was to find the right set-up. In addition, it was rarely possible to bring the tires to the correct operating temperature. As a result, the front and rear wheel suspensions of the F2004 were completely redesigned. At the same time, the rigidity of the vehicle has been increased so that the tires can be used more efficiently. The F2004 was much easier to set up than its predecessor, which was partly due to the fact that the F2004 was developed almost exclusively with new technologies in the wind tunnel.

Other changes, such as a rear wing with two instead of three elements, longer end plates, a larger engine cover or the new gearbox were the result of the new technical regulations.

Unlike in previous years, Ferrari fielded the F2004 directly in the first race of the season.

engine

With the Tipo 053, Ferrari used a V10 naturally aspirated engine developed in-house. The engine made of aluminum had a displacement of 2997 cm³ and a 90 ° cylinder bank angle. At a weight of approx. 95 kg, it was 597 mm long, 530 mm wide and 353 mm high. At the beginning of the season, it had an output of around 636 kW (865 hp) in racing mode at 18,300 rpm. Two major improvements to the engine were developed and implemented during the season. These engines were called Tipo 053B and 053C and developed up to 920 hp.

driver

The driver pairing Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello did not change anything in the 2004 season. Both drivers contested all races.

Test drivers were the Italian Luca Badoer and the Brazilian Luciano Burti .

successes

The vehicle became one of the most successful racing cars in Ferrari and motorsport history.

Schumacher and Barrichello won 15 of the 18 races of the season with the F2004 and achieved twelve pole positions . In 12 races, one of the two drivers achieved the fastest race lap . At the end of the season there were 29 podium places. In addition, they achieved 272 world championship points and won both the driver and constructor titles. This balance was due, among other things, to the outstanding reliability of the F2004. So there were only two failures, both of which were caused by a collision.

The F2004 set several lap records. The lap records in Melbourne , Shanghai , Monza , Bahrain , Magny-Cours , San Marino and the Nürburgring are still in place today, although Formula 1 races are still held on four of these tracks. The driver record of 13 wins this season set by Schumacher in the 2004 season is still in place today. Sebastian Vettel also achieved 13 victories in the 2013 season , but he did so in 19 races in total - one more than in 2004 (18 races).

At the beginning of the 2005 season, Ferrari used the model with the designation F2004M for two races until it was replaced by the successor F2005 . The F2004M came second and was canceled twice.

Trivia

At a Sotheby’s auction in 2005, a Ferrari F2004 was sold for 3,198,500  US dollars (= approx. 2.65 million euros ). Michael Schumacher drove this vehicle in the 2004 Formula 1 World Championship in Australia , Malaysia , Bahrain , San Marino , Spain and Monaco .

The F2004 formed the basis for the A1GP standard vehicle developed in cooperation with Ferrari in 2008 .

As part of the preliminary program for the 2019 German Grand Prix , Mick Schumacher drove the F2004, with which Michael Schumacher won his 7th World Championship title 15 years earlier.
