Fiorano Modenese is a town with 17,148 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Modena in Emilia-Romagna .

geography

Fiorano Modenese is 10 km southwest of Modena and approximately 50 km west of Bologna . The neighboring municipalities are Formigine , Maranello , Sassuolo and Serramazzoni . The districts (fractions) Spezzano and Nirano also belong to the municipality.

The Salse di Nirano nature reserve belongs to the municipality .

Attractions

The castle of Spezzano was built in the 11th century and first mentioned in a document in 1225. In 1395 it was given to the Pio family from Carpi as a fief . They converted the castle from a fortress into a political and administrative center and built the Palace of the Pio , in which there is a cycle of 56 frescoes "Vedute dei feudi dei Pio", on which the castles, cities and regions belong to the Pio represents are. Since 1982 the castle has been owned by the Municipality of Fiorano Modenese. Today it houses a ceramic museum.

A fortress in Fiorano Modenese was destroyed in 1510. The pilgrimage church Santuario della beata Vergine del Castello was built in its place starting in 1634 and was not completed until 1889. It contains frescoes by Tommaso Costa.

The parish church of Fiorano Modenese dates from 1572.
