Finale Emilia is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 15,214 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Modena in Emilia-Romagna . The municipality is located about 35 kilometers north of Bologna and about 35 kilometers northeast of Modena . Finale Emilia borders the metropolitan city of Bologna and the province of Ferrara . The municipality is located on the Panaro , a tributary of the Po . The Collettore delle Acque Alte canal also flows into the Panaro here.

history

The place was first mentioned in 1009 in a document of the Bishop of Modena. In the High and Late Middle Ages, the municipality was under the rule of the Dukes of Modena and Ferrara.

On May 20, 2012 and May 29, the city was shaken by earthquakes (magnitudes 6.0 and 5.8). Some historical buildings were destroyed or badly damaged. The Este fortress collapsed during the second quake .

Finale Emilia maintains a partnership with the French municipality of Grézieu-la-Varenne in the Rhône department and an intra-Italian partnership with the municipality of Villa Sant'Angelo in the province of L'Aquila .
