history
The Frassinoro monastery on the Foce della Radici Apennine pass goes back to a donation by Beatrix of Lorraine , wife of Boniface of Canossa and mother of Mathilde of Tuscia , on August 29, 1071. The monastery was richly decorated with furniture and marble from Carrara. In 1173 the abbey was conquered and in 1210 the monastery was abandoned, in 1261 the abbot renounced all secular power. In 1585 Pope Sixtus V handed over the rights and administration of the property to the College of the Maronites of Rome. Duke Francesco III. then handed it over to the Congregation of the Brothers of Mercy in Modena in 1771. After a landslide had destroyed the old abbey in the 15th century, some components were used to build today's church, the bell tower and the rectory.
