Castelfranco Emilia is a northern Italian municipality ( comune ) with 33,058 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region . The city is located about twelve kilometers southeast of Modena and about 25 kilometers northwest of Bologna . The municipality borders on the metropolitan city of Bologna , to which it belonged until 1929 (then still "Province of Bologna"). Since 2006 the parish has city rights by presidential decree.

history

The so-called Forum Gallorum is located near the city . Here on the former Via Aemilia , Octavian and Aulus Hirtius defeated Marcus Antonius in 43 BC . The origins of the place can be found at the end of the 12th century. The place is mentioned several times around 1225. The church of Santa Maria Assunta was built between 1226 and 1232. Between 1628 and 1634 the fortress was built by Pope Urban VIII to serve as the northern bulwark of the Papal States.

Tortellini is said to have been invented in the city .

Castelfranco Emilia is on State Road 9 , which runs from Bologna to Modena. The A1 Autostrada is just south of it . The railway line from Modena to Bologna also crosses the town.
