Zocca is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 4591 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Modena , Emilia-Romagna region .

Geographical location

Zocca is located about 31 km southeast of Modena in the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines at 759  m slm in the catchment area of ​​the Panaro and Samoggia rivers . The municipality Zocca also belong the fractions Ciano, Missano Montalbano, Montecorone, Montetortore, Monteombraro and Rosola.

history

During the medieval wars between Modena and Bologna , this area experienced alternating rule, only to finally come under the administration of Modena in 1337. In the feudal age the area was divided between the noble families Montecuccoli and Rangoni . In the middle of the 19th century, the village of Zocca, whose name means clear-cutting in Emilian , was elevated to the rank of municipal capital.
