Formigine is an Italian commune ( comune ) with 34,546 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in the province of Modena in the Emilia-Romagna region . The municipality borders on the neighboring province of Reggio Emilia . The city is about five kilometers southwest of Modena .

history

In 1201 a fortress was built in this area by the city-state of Modena to serve as a bulwark against the hostile city of Bologna . As a fief, the estate of Niccolò III. d'Este in 1395 given to Marco Pio , who ruled over the rule of Carpi . The fortress can still be seen in the city center today.
