history

The location of Camposanto on the Panaro played a strategic role during the Parma War, which was fought between summer 1551 and spring 1552. Papal and imperial troops were brought together to siege the fortress of Mirandola , which was built by Galeotto Pico della Mirandola with the financial support of the French King Francis I and his son Henry II . The supply for the large army, which camped between Crevalcore and San Giovanni in Persiceto , was carried out over the bridges at Camposanto and Solara.

On February 8, 1743, during the War of the Austrian Succession, a battle took place near Camposanto between the Spanish army under the command of General Jean Bonaventure Thierry du Mont, Count von Gages, and the Austro-Piedmontese army under the command of Field Marshal Otto Ferdinand von Abensperg and Traun instead. After a tough battle, the Spanish army was defeated and had to withdraw.
