The province of Fermo ( Italian : Provincia di Fermo ) is the fifth province in the Marche region . The capital is called Fermo . The province was introduced into law in 2004. In June 2009 the first provincial council elections took place. The province of Fermo includes 40 municipalities (municipalities) and has about 173,004 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) on an area of 860 km².
The territory of the province of Fermo borders on the province of Macerata in the north and belonged to the province of Ascoli Piceno from 1861 to 2004 .
