The province of Ascoli Piceno (Italian Provincia di Ascoli Piceno ) is an Italian province of the Marche region . The capital is Ascoli Piceno . It has around 206,363 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019) in 33 municipalities on an area of 1228 km².
The province borders in the north on the province of Fermo , and in the north-west on the province of Macerata , through the only small municipality Castelsantangelo sul Nera , in the Apennine mountain range called Monti Sibillini , in the east on the Adriatic Sea , in the south on the Abruzzo ( Teramo province ) and Latium ( province of Rieti ) and in the southwest to the region of Umbria ( province of Perugia ).
The province was awarded the Medaglia d'oro al valor militare for its services in partisan combat during World War II . In 2004 the newly created Province of Fermo was spun off and became fully operational with the 2009 elections to the Provincial Council.
