geography

area

It is the southernmost coastal municipality in the Marche . The natural boundaries in the south (River Tronto ) and in the east ( Adriatic Sea ) are well delimited, while they are not recognizable in the north and west. The strong urban expansion in the area between the sea and the hills does not allow easy reading of the city limits.

climate

San Benedetto enjoys a particularly mild Mediterranean climate with mild winters (average 7 ° C seasonal) and hot but not humid summers (approx. 23 ° C average). The average annual temperature is around 15 ° C, while rainfall is generally between 700 and 800 mm

city

The city has an old core (the "highlands" or "Su dèntrë" in Sambenedettese) on a modest relief not far from the sea, at the foot of which the original city of the youngest part, the "Marina", is being built. This river is crossed by the Albula River and has developed over the years to the Tronto River in the south, where the locality of Porto d'Ascoli is located. In the north it is welded to the Ischia district in Grottammare , with which it represents a single urban agglomeration that almost reaches the Tesino River. To the southwest follows the bank of the Tronto with the hamlet of Centobuchi di Monteprandone .

The municipality of San Benedetto del Tronto and the neighboring municipalities of Grottammare , Acquaviva Picena , Monteprandone , Colonnella and Martinsicuro are configured as a single urban unit, as there is no continuity solution between the settlements. This agglomeration has undergone a remarkable and constant development since the post-war period until today: it had 47,337 inhabitants in 1951 , 70,140 in 1971, 96,012 in 2007 and 100,611 in July 2010 , spread over an area of 125 km² and a population density of 805 inhabitants / km².

economy

Fishing and shipbuilding

San Benedetto, trawler at the port.

San Benedetto del Tronto has developed over the centuries into a fishing and tourist pole of national importance. In 1912 , the start of a motorized fish transport company began with the conversion of the propulsion of the ships that reached the deep-sea fishing vessels from the sails. In addition to these events, there have also been modernizations and developments in other sectors directly related to activities at sea, such as shipbuilding, hemp processing, cable and network construction, shipbuilding workshops, on-board instruments, the marketing of fish (San Benedetto has the most important Fish wholesale market in Italy), the cold chains for the transport of fish. Although this sector is continuously declining, this sector remains a driving force for the local economy if we do not only consider the properly maritime part (note that San Benedetto del Tronto is the second largest Italian port after Mazara del Vallo, by volume and Number of fish caught by the fishing boats and one of the largest fish markets in Italy) but all related industries are taken into account, and most importantly the highly developed canning industry that was founded to promote the marketing of fish and is now dealing with all food products, mainly these is fruits and vegetables. In San Benedetto del Tronto we also find a professional training center for anglers.

tourism

Tourism is the city's main source of income. San Benedetto has established itself as one of the most famous and popular Italian seaside resorts since the early decades of the twentieth century. Since the second half of the sixties, it has also established itself as the most popular travel destination in the Marche due to the number of visitors. During the summer, San Benedetto, triple and sometimes quadruple its population, can reach a daily population of 150,000 to 200,000 among tourists housed in lodging and commuting. It carries the European Union's Blue Flag and invests in the promotion and consolidation of an image that is not only acquired nationally.

This image has been conveyed for about a decade with the "Riviera delle Palme" brand, a name which they share under the same Tourism Promotion Company and which also includes the other two coastal towns in the southernmost part of the Piceno. Grottammare and Cupra Marittima , in addition to some villages in the San Benedetto area, Offida , Monteprandone , Acquaviva Picena , Ripatransone and the Lazio municipality of Accumoli (joined the consortium in 2008).
