Alfortville is a French commune near Paris with 43,881 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2017) in the Val-de-Marne department in the Île-de-France region . It has existed since April 1, 1885 , when it separated from Maisons-Alfort after the municipality was cut in two by the Paris- Lyon railway line .

history

Until the end of the 19th century, the community was more rural and then grew very strongly around 1900 due to industrialization . Since the Second World War , the population has increased from around 30,000 to over 40,000. Alfortville took in many Armenian refugees during the Armenian genocide , which is why many of the city's residents are of Armenian origin. Their most famous football club, UJA Alfortville , also emerged from this population group. In 1984 the gray wolf Abdullah Çatlı and the Turkish intelligence service carried out a bomb attack on the memorial to the genocide of the Armenians .

geography

The parish is four and a half kilometers long and only half a kilometer to a kilometer wide. The neighboring municipalities are Vitry-sur-Seine , Ivry-sur-Seine , Charenton-le-Pont , Maisons-Alfort , Créteil and Choisy-le-Roi .

The municipality is bordered to the west by the Seine , to the north by the Marne , to the east by the Paris-Lyon railway line and to the south by the A86 motorway .

politics

The municipality has been ruled by a mayor from the Socialist Party of France (PS) since 1965 . From 1988 to 2012 René Rouquet headed the local authorities, since 2012 it has been Luc Carvounas.
