Cantanhede is a cidade and a district ( concelho ) in Portugal with 7730 inhabitants (as of June 30, 2011).
On September 29, 2013, the municipalities of Cantanhede and Pocariça were merged to form the new municipality of União das Freguesias de Cantanhede e Pocariça . Cantanhede is the seat of this newly formed community.
history
Finds show that the area was settled at least since the Middle Paleolithic . The present place was first mentioned in 1057 when D.Sisnando had the area fortified and settled. On May 20, 1514, King Manuel I renewed the former city rights ( Foral ) granted by King Afonso II .
According to Fernão Lopes , King Pedro I announced his posthumous marriage to the murdered Inês de Castro here in 1360 .
On August 16, 1991, the previous Vila (small town) Cantanhede was elevated to a Cidade (town).

Cantanhede is the seat of a district of the same name. The neighboring districts are Vagos , Oliveira do Bairro and Anadia in the north, Mealhada in the east , Coimbra in the south, Montemor-o-Velho and Figueira da Foz in the south, Mira in the south-west and the Atlantic Ocean in the west .
With the regional reform in September 2013, several municipalities were merged into new municipalities, so that the number of municipalities decreased from 19 to 14.

economy
Cantanhede is known nationwide and internationally for its wines, especially red wine. It is also a focus of the country's watch and jewelry production.
In the municipalities of Cantanhede, Febres , Murtede and Tocha are the four industrial areas of the district, the Parques Industriais , in which a large number of manufacturing, administration and logistics companies have settled. In the Beira Atlântico Parque - Parque Tecnológico e Cultural de Cantanhede (German: Atlantic Park of the Beira Region - Cantanhede Culture and Technology Park ), in addition to the New Economy , biotechnology , oenology and forest science are the main focus .
Agriculture and some tourism, especially on the beaches of the municipality of Tocha, should also be mentioned.

Since the suspension of the Ramal da Figueira da Foz in 2009, Cantanhede no longer has its own railway connection; the nearest train station is now the Linha do Norte stop in Mealhada , 13 km away .
Via the motorway network, Cantanhede can be reached via the Mealhada junction on the A1 , 13 km away , via the Ançã junction on the A14 , 10 km away , and via the Tocha junction on the A17, 15 km away .
