Jaime Cortesão
Jaime Zuzarte Cortesão (born April 29, 1884 in Ançã ( Cantanhede ), † August 14, 1960 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese doctor , politician , historian and author .
Cortesão worked as a doctor after studying medicine at the University of Porto . In 1919 he became director of the National Library in Lisbon. In 1921 he was one of the founders of Seara Nova magazine . As a staunch Democrat and Republican, he was one of the leaders of the counter-rebellion in Porto in February 1927 after the fascist coup d'état. After the failure, he went into exile , first to France and in 1940 to Brazil . He did not return to Portugal until three decades later , where he died in 1960.
His works are primarily about the Portuguese discoveries around the world and about colonial Brazil . He collected folk songs and published them and showed himself with them and with a number of historical verse dramas as the successor to his compatriot Almeida Garrett .
