João Baptista da Silva Leitão de Almeida, Visconde de Garrett (born February 4, 1799 in Porto , † December 9, 1854 in Lisbon ) was a Portuguese novelist, poet, playwright and politician. From 1834 to 1836 he was also Portugal's first ambassador to Belgium , and in 1852 he was Portuguese Foreign Minister .

Almeida Garrett studied law at the Law Faculty of the University of Coimbra and practiced early in life with great and flexible talent in all genres of literature. His influence on Portuguese literature was and still is considerable. In addition, of all the great writers of the 19th century, he is the one who is most read, studied and respected by the younger generation. His role as a politician was no less handsome than that of a writer. Some of his speeches to Parliament became famous, so it can be assumed that he was not only able to find the right words, but also to deliver them effectively. Still, it was in poetry and theater where the name Almeida Garrett achieved immortality.

In 1836 he was commissioned by the government to found a national theater and a theater school, after which the Teatro Nacional D. Maria II and the National Conservatory (today Escola Superior de Teatro e Cinema ) were created.
