The movie Don't be afraid! - The life of Pope John Paul II tells in biographical form the life story of the head of the Roman Catholic Church , Pope John Paul II, who died in 2005. The title is part of the famous appeal in his first sermon as Pope on October 22, 1978: “Fear not you! Open the gates for Christ! "
action
The plot of the film begins with the Pope's visit to Jerusalem , a stop on his 91st trip abroad , which took place between March 20 and 26, 2000.
At the Western Wall he asks forgiveness for the sins of the church before he retires to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher alone . Here he remembers the stages of his life in prayer.
At a young age he lost his mother and beloved brother Edmund. He had to see how his beloved homeland Poland was annexed by the National Socialists . Yet his life was always devoted to love for Jesus of Nazareth and the Mother of God, Mary .
He is ordained a priest, becomes Archbishop of Krakow and begins the fight against communism and oppression. On October 16, 1978 Karol Wojtyla becomes the 264th Pope of the Roman Catholic Church, who now calls himself John Paul II .
The "Polish Pope" is making history himself with the second longest pontificate in history. He survived the assassination attempt by Ali Ağca , had communism collapse through his influence and led the church into the 21st century.
The film ends with the death of the Pope on April 2, 2005.
background
The film was shot in Lithuania and partly on the original locations in Rome . Since Benedict XVI. The BBC had already allowed its depiction of the life of Pope John Paul II to be shot in the Vatican . For this film, scenes that were set in the Vatican only had to be hinted at and mixed with the original footage.
The German-language first broadcast took place on March 1, 2006 on ATVplus .
Film bug
Cardinal Wyszynski mentions to Karol Wojtyla on the day of his election as Pope that the “ German Cardinal” Franz König will support him in the conclave . Cardinal König, however, was an Austrian .
Probably for dramaturgical reasons, the counting of the votes in the conclave is extremely simplified and abbreviated. What is done in silence by a cardinal in the film is to be carried out in a real conclave of three people present, with each ballot cast being read aloud.
The view of how the conclave is shown seems to come from the film about Pope John XXIII. to be influenced because the scene is similar.
Archbishop Óscar Romero was not shot at the altar during the consecration as shown in the film , but standing in front of the altar during a sermon.
