Stanisław Jan Cardinal Dziwisz [ staˈɲiswaf ˈdʑivʲiʃ ] (born April 27, 1939 in Raba Wyżna near Cracow , Poland ) is a Polish clergyman and emeritus Roman Catholic Archbishop of Cracow . He was previously the long-time secretary of Pope John Paul II.

Life

After finishing the general education lyceum in Nowy Targ in 1957, Dziwisz attended the Higher Spiritual Seminary in Krakow, where he studied philosophy and theology .

Dziwisz received on 23 June 1963 by the then Auxiliary Bishop of Krakow, Karol Wojtyla and later Pope John Paul II. The Holy Orders . Between 1963 and 1965 he was vicar in Maków Podhalański , after which he deepened his theological studies, which he completed in 1967 with a licentiate . The doctorate followed in 1981 . The subject of his doctoral thesis was: Cult of the holy Bishop Stanislaus up to the Council of Trent .

In 1966 he became secretary of the Kraków Archbishop Wojtyła. He was considered secretive, according to reports from contemporary witnesses, he was not intimidated by the secret police and was an excellent skier who could accompany his Archbishop in winter sports. In 1978 he followed Wojtyła to the Vatican after his election as Pope . On June 18, 1979, John Paul II awarded him the honorary title of Chaplain of His Holiness ( Monsignor ) and on October 3, 1985 the title of Papal Honorary Prelate . On February 7, 1998, John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of San Leone and Assistant Prefect of the Papal House . The episcopal ordination donated him John Paul II on 19 March of the same year. St. Peter's Basilica ; Co- consecrators were Cardinal Secretary of State Angelo Sodano and Cardinal Franciszek Macharski , Archbishop of Cracow. On September 29, 2003 he was raised to titular archbishop pro hac vice while maintaining his titular bishopric . He served John Paul II until his death on April 2, 2005.

Dziwisz was one of the small circle of clergymen who were present in his chambers at the hour of the Pope's death. Unusually, Dziwisz had already been ordained a bishop while he was serving as papal private secretary . Speculations that he could also have been appointed cardinal in pectore by John Paul II were not confirmed after the death of the Pope. In the final years of the Pope's life in particular, Dziwisz was considered one of the most influential clergy in the Vatican, mainly because he was able to have a decisive influence on the visitors John Paul II received. He was even said to have influenced the appointment of bishops.

On June 1, 2005, the appointment by Pope Benedict XVI. announced as Archbishop of Krakow with effect from June 3, 2005. Dziwisz's predecessor, Cardinal Franciszek Macharski , had already offered his resignation three years earlier, when he reached the age of 75, in accordance with Catholic canon law. Dziwisz's inauguration as Archbishop of Krakow took place on August 27, 2005. Dziwisz announced that he wanted to exercise his office in the spirit of Wojtyłas. In November 2016 he initiated the solemn "Coronation of Jesus Christ as King of Poland". Pope Francis accepted his age-related resignation from the office of Archbishop of Kraków on December 8, 2016.

In July 2018, Cardinal Dziwisz publicly spoke out in favor of a beatification process for the parents of John Paul II, which was initiated in March 2020 in the Archdiocese of Krakow.

Criticism of the Pope's resignation

When Pope Benedict XVI.
