Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care

The Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care in Health Care ( Latin : Pontificium Consilium pro Valetudinis Administris ) was established by John Paul II's Motu Proprio Dolentium Hominum on February 11, 1985 as the Pontifical Commission for Pastoral Care in Health Care . With the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus of June 28, 1988, the commission was elevated to a permanent Pontifical Council. The council was dissolved on January 1, 2017.

tasks

The council coordinated the activities of the various dicasteries insofar as they concerned health care . Its tasks consisted in promoting and providing impetus for vocational training and studies . He disseminated, explained, and strengthened the Church's teachings on health issues by liaising with local churches and bishops in the health service area . The Council developed health policy programs and initiatives at international and national levels. The magazine “Dolentium Hominum” appeared quarterly under the responsibility of the Pontifical Council.

On August 17, 2016, Pope Francis ordered the dissolution of the Council on January 1, 2017 with the Motu Proprio Humanam progressionem. The previous competences of the Council were taken over from this point on by the newly established Dicastery for the holistic development of man , whose leadership the Pope previous President of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace , Peter Cardinal Turkson transferred.

Bureau

The presidium consisted of the president, a secretary, an undersecretary and six assessors . The Pope appointed a further 36 members and up to 50 advisors, each composed of bishops, priests , religious and lay people . The Presidium coordinated and organized conferences, technical meetings and lectures related to health care . Every year in November an international conference was held in the Vatican . The topic was determined by the Presidium.
