Javier Lozano Barragán
Javier Cardinal Lozano Barragán (born January 26, 1933 in Toluca , Mexico ) is a cardinal emeritus of the Roman Catholic Church .
Life
Javier Lozano Barragán studied philosophy and Catholic theology in Zamora and Rome . On October 30, 1955, he received the sacrament of ordination from the Curia Bishop and later Cardinal Carlo Confalonieri and then worked at the seminary of Zamora as prefect and lecturer. In addition, he headed the Institute for Pastoral Theology of the Latin American Bishops' Conference CELAM .
On June 5, 1979 appointed him Pope John Paul II. To the titular of Thinisa in Numidia and Auxiliary Bishop in Mexico City . The Archbishop of Mexico City, Ernesto Cardinal Corripio y Ahumada , ordained him episcopal on August 15 of the same year. Co - consecrators were the Old Archbishop of Mexico City, Cardinal Miguel Darío Miranda y Gómez , and the Bishop of Zamora , José Esaúl Robles Jiménez .
On October 28, 1984 he was appointed bishop of the Zacatecas diocese , of which Lozano Barragán held until October 31, 1996. On January 7, 1997, John Paul II appointed him President of the Pontifical Council for Health Pastoral Care . In this role he was, among other things, the organizer of the World Sick Days.
On October 21, 2003 he was accepted into the College of Cardinals as a cardinal deacon with the title deaconry of San Michele Arcangelo .
Lozano Barragán was a participant in the 2005 conclave , in which Benedict XVI. was chosen. This confirmed him on April 21, 2005 in all of his curial offices. On April 18, 2009 Pope Benedict XVI. Lozano Barragán's motion to resign from the office of President of the Pontifical Council for Pastoral Care in Health Care, for reasons of age, and appointed Zygmunt Zimowski as his successor. At the conclave in 2013 Cardinal Lozano Barragan did not participate in the age limit for exceeding.
On June 12, 2014, he was made cardinal priest and Santa Dorotea his titular church .
