Archdiocese of Mexico
The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Mexico ( lat. : Archidioecesis Mexicana , Span. : Arquidiócesis de México ) is a in Mexico located Roman Catholic archdiocese , based in Mexico City .
history
The diocese of Mexico was established on September 2, 1530 by Pope Clement VII with the papal bull Sacri Apostolorum ministerio from cession of the diocese of Tlaxcala and was subordinate to the Archdiocese of Seville as a suffragan . On February 12, 1546, the diocese of Mexico was raised to an archdiocese.
On September 28, 2019, Pope Francis established the dioceses of Azcapotzalco , Iztapalapa and Xochimilco from parts of the territory of the Archdiocese of Mexico , which he subordinated to this as suffragans . The dioceses of Atlacomulco , Cuernavaca and Tenancingo , which had previously belonged to the ecclesiastical province of Mexico City , were assigned as suffragans to the ecclesiastical province of Toluca, which was established on the same date .
The Archbishop of Mexico City is also the Primate of Mexico. The Archdiocese of Mexico is considered to be a bishopric traditionally associated with the cardinal dignity .
It includes the following districts (Delegaciones) of Mexico City: Álvaro Obregón , Benito Juárez , Coyoacán , Cuajimalpa de Morelos , Cuauhtémoc , Iztacalco , La Magdalena Contreras , Miguel Hidalgo , Tlalpan , Venustiano Carranza and the eastern part of Gustavo A. Madero .
