Tlalpan is the largest of the 16 administrative districts ( delegaciones ) of Mexico City in terms of area . In 2010, around 650,000 people lived here. The place name comes from the Nahuatl and means "above the earth" ( tlalli = earth, pan = over).

Tlalpan is located in the southwest of the urban area and is bordered by Coyoacan to the north, Magdalena Contreras district to the west, the state of México to the southwest , Morelos to the south and the Xochimilco and Milpa Alta districts to the east . In addition to the actual Tlalpan, the Delegación includes 140 other localities, including two medium- sized towns with San Miguel Topilejo and San Miguel Ajusco .

history

In the area of today's Delegación Tlalpan are the oldest human settlements in the valley of Mexico : Cuicuilco , Ajusco and Topilejo . Cuicuilco was between 650 and 100 BC. Settled and had about 20,000 inhabitants.

At the time of the Aztecs, Tlalpan was an independent place south of the town of Tenochtitlán in Lake Texcoco . This is where the name comes from, as Tlalpan, in contrast to the areas in the lake, is not on "floating islands" but on solid ground.

geography

The Delegación has a total area of more than 300 km², of which the largest part (about 70%) is forest, fallow land and agricultural areas; less than 30% are residential and industrial areas.

In the area of Tlapan there is, among other things, the extinct volcano Xitle , whose eruption around 100 BC. Destroyed the cultural center of Cuicuilco.

Many colonial houses are still preserved in the historic center. On the building of the district administration there are large wall paintings that show the history of the place. An extensive park, the Bosque de Tlalpan , is a popular excursion destination for the residents of the capital near the center of Tlalpan with an almost rural zocalo .
