Morelos [ moˈɾelos ], officially Free and Sovereign State Morelos ( Spanish Estado Libre y Soberano de Morelos ) is a central state of Mexico . Morelos is located immediately south of the capital and also borders the states of México , Guerrero and Puebla . As the second smallest state in Mexico, it has 4950 km² and around 1.8 million inhabitants. The capital is Cuernavaca , Morelos is subdivided into 33 Municipios . Morelos was founded on April 17, 1869. The state was named after José María Morelos , a hero of the War of Independence.
Morelos is located at the transition from the Sierra Volcánica Transversal to the Depresión del Balsas . The highest point is the Popocatépetl , thanks to its climatically favorable location there are many health resorts in Morelos. Besides Cuernavaca, the most famous is Cuautla . The excavation sites El Tepozteco , Coatetelco and Xochicalco are also known .
Morelos is also the home state of Emiliano Zapata .
