Coahuila [ koaˈwila ], also Coahuila de Zaragoza [ koaˈwila ðe saɾaˈɣosa ], officially Free and Sovereign State of Coahuila de Zaragoza ( Spanish Estado Libre y Soberano de Coahuila de Zaragoza ), is a Mexican state in the north of the country, on the border with Texas , which the Rio Grande forms in a wide arc. The border is a total of 512 km long. The neighboring Mexican states are Nuevo León in the east, San Luis Potosí and Zacatecas in the south and Durango and Chihuahua in the west .

Coahuila de Zaragoza has 3,055,395 inhabitants (2010 census) after strong population growth in recent years (around 2.5 million in 2005, 2.3 million in 2000, 2.2 million in 1995 and 2.0 million in 1990) . This corresponds to about 2.4% of the Mexican population (15th place among the Mexican states). The area of ​​151,571 km² corresponds to about 7.7% of the area of ​​the state of Mexico, from which a mean population density of 20 inhabitants per km² is calculated, well below the Mexican mean of 50 inhabitants per km².

Most of the country consists of desert steppes of the Chihuahua Desert , the Sierra Madre Oriental forms the eastern border with Nuevo León . The capital is Saltillo . Other important cities are Torreón , Monclova , Piedras Negras and Ciudad Acuña , which together make up over 60% of the population. Coahuila is further subdivided administratively into 38 municipalities , the smallest of which has around 1,000 inhabitants.

With a value of 0.791, Coahuila achieved 6th place among the 31 states of Mexico in the human development index in 2015 .
