history

Saltillo was founded in 1577 by the captain Alberto del Canto during a joint Spanish-Portuguese expedition under the name of Santiago del Saltillo and in 1591 400 native families were already working here for the conquerors. In 1811, Miguel Hidalgo was captured near the town . In 1824 Saltillo became the capital of Coahuila and Texas . On November 5, 1827, the city was renamed Leona Vicario in honor of the heroes of the Mexican War of Independence , but renamed Saltillo on April 2, 1831. In 1836, Texas split from Mexico as a result of its War of Independence . In 1840, northern provinces renounced Mexico and founded the Republic of Rio Grande .
