John Deere is both the name of the founder and the main brand of the US company Deere & Company , one of the leading manufacturers of the world market for agricultural equipment (2007). The name John Deere is often used as a synonym for the company. The company's other products include forestry machines, construction machinery and equipment for lawn and property maintenance, which are offered worldwide through an international sales network.
Other brands of the group are Deere ( construction machines and engines ), Kemper (harvesting attachments), SABO ( lawn mowers (sold in 2020) and scarifiers ) as well as Frontier (including equipment for grassland and tillage ), PartsCountry and Vapormatic (spare parts for third-party products).
history
19th century
John Deere was born on February 17, 1804 in Rutland . From 1821 to 1825 he trained as a blacksmith with Benjamin Lawrence in Middlebury , Vermont . For economic reasons, he moved in 1836 westward to Grand Detour ( Illinois , 16 km south of Oregon (Illinois) ). In 1837 the farrier developed the first self-cleaning steel plow using a hitherto unknown sharpening and polishing process (originally developed for leather needles) and thus laid the foundation for his company Deere & Company , better known under the trademark John Deere . In 1848, after separating from his business partner Leonard Andrus, with whom he had worked for five years, he moved the company headquarters from Grand Detour to Moline , Illinois. There was still no blacksmith of its quality there, and its location on the Mississippi River offered hydropower and cheaper transportation by river and rail. 20th century
With the takeover of the Waterloo Gasoline Engine Company shortly after the First World War (1918), John Deere entered the tractor business. During the period of the Great Depression from 1931 to 1933, Deere & Company, contrary to current practice, refrained from reclaiming deliveries from insolvent farmers and thus gained loyal customers.
In 1956 Deere & Company took over the German Heinrich Lanz AG in Mannheim, which had designed the Lanz Bulldog and also produced it.
In 1958, the construction machinery division was founded with the introduction of the 440 (caterpillar / wheel drive) and 435 industrial tractors.
In the 1980s , John Deere was sucked into the deep recession in agriculture, but remained independent as the only large manufacturer in the field of agricultural technology. After previously cooperating with Hitachi Transportation Systems , the Deere-Hitachi Construction Machinery joint venture was founded in 1988 .
In 1991 the company started working for lawn care equipment manufacturer SABO in Gummersbach. In 1997, the Kemper machine factory from Stadtlohn was bought. With sales of $ 13.8 billion, John Deere posted a record 1998 profit of $ 1.021 billion. In 1998 John Deere took over a manufacturer of sugar cane harvesters, Cameco Industries . In 1999 John Deere acquired Timberjack from Metso , the world's largest supplier of forest machinery . The group's sales doubled in the years 2000–2010 from approx. 13 to 26 billion US dollars. In the same period, profits climbed from approximately $ 500 million to $ 1.85 billion. In June 2000, John Deere International GmbH was founded in Schaffhausen (CH) for market development in Europe, Africa and the Near and Middle East (EMEA).
In October 2007, the German branch moved its headquarters within Mannheim from Steubenstrasse to Windeckstrasse. criticism
In 2015, John Deere came under criticism from consumer groups such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation . Use license formulations were criticized , which should prohibit the owners of John Deere tractors from modifying their software. John Deere's reason for doing this was because of the DMCA- prohibited bypassing of DRM mechanisms. The argument was user safety. They wanted to try self repairs to prevent tractors by their owners.
Company colors and logo
The corporate colors of Deere & Company have been a dark green for the vehicle since 1920 and yellow for the inscription, rims or earlier studded steel wheels and track covers. This color scheme goes back to the colors of the corn crop . This forms the backbone of arable production in the American Midwest .
The company logo was in 1848 of a steel plow (for oxen). Since 1873 it shows a jumping stag (English deer ). The company emblem of John Deere at that time consisted of a white-tailed deer leaping over a tree trunk with outstretched legs , overarched with "JOHN DEERE".

A large part of the production also takes place outside of North America, mainly in Europe . The largest company location outside the USA is the John Deere plant in Mannheim . The sales office responsible for Germany is located in Bruchsal. Other plants in Germany are Zweibrücken , Bruchsal , Gummersbach and Stadtlohn . The SABO factories are located in Gummersbach. The Kemper company in Stadtlohn produces harvesting attachments for combine harvesters and forage harvesters, while the Bruchsal plant produces the driver's cabs for tractors and harvesting machines . Other factories in Europe are Horst aan de Maas in the Netherlands (crop protection equipment), Arc Les Gray (forage harvesting equipment) and Saran (engines) in France and Getafe (transmission components) in Spain. Forest machines are manufactured in Joensuu, Finland, and pneumatic seed drills in Orenburg (Russia) .
In markets where John Deere does not have its own sales offices, the products are sold through national distributors who also offer customer service, spare parts supply and financing. In Switzerland z. B. Matra is the general importer of John Deere products, in Austria the company Lagerhaus Technik-Center (LTC). John Deere has large market shares in the agricultural machinery market in the Russian Federation . The main John Deere dealer in Russia is EkoNiva .
Product range
In addition to agricultural tractors with an engine output of 55 to 620 hp, agricultural equipment such as combine harvesters , forage harvesters and balers , but also cotton and sugar cane harvesters, as well as special machines and equipment for protecting plants, for sowing and for cultivating the soil are manufactured. However, the John Deere product range includes not only agricultural products, but also construction machinery ( wheel loaders , bulldozers and crawler loaders, soil planers , excavators and backhoe loaders , etc.), forest machines, municipal tractors and machines for lawn, property and golf course maintenance. Products for GPS- supported precision agriculture, recording yield measurement and documentation and software for fleet management are also sold.
Common rail engines with exhaust gas recirculation, variable turbocharger geometry and diesel particle filters are partly installed. The articulated tractor models of the 9R and 9RT series are used not only in the field, but also as tractors, for example for trailed earth planers, for routing work.

The introduction of the new 5R Series in 2009 changed the designation of tractors at John Deere. The first number stands for the series it is about; the other three indicate the motor output at nominal speed according to the 97/68 / EC standard. The letters say something about the equipment. The further back this is in the alphabet, the more extensive the equipment, for example the letter R stands for the highest equipment variation or the letter T for equipment with a caterpillar treadmill.

In the road movie A True Story - The Straight Story by David Lynch , a John Deere lawnmower tractor, equipped with a self-made trailer, takes on the “technical lead”. The protagonist - he is too old and frail to drive himself and does not want to be driven - embarks on a 500-kilometer journey from the US state of Iowa to Wisconsin . In contrast to other fast-paced works in this genre, this gives the film an almost meditative quality. For the finale, the ride-on mower is guided the last few meters to its destination by a John Deere tractor, which is monstrous compared to it. In addition, John Deere combine harvesters appear in some scenes, depicting a “harvest of life” in metaphorical images.
