history

From grass mower to Dieselross

The history of the Fendt family of craftsmen goes back 350 years. The manufacture of tower clocks, lead trains and violins gave her regional fame in the Allgäu. The family also ran a sideline in agriculture and had a small trade in agricultural equipment. Johann Georg Fendt, born on August 16, 1868, took over the family business of his father Franz Xaver in 1898 and began selling Deutz stationary engines, for which he also carried out maintenance and repairs at the customer's site. While the first-born son Xaver left the family business and worked for large companies such as Deutz and BMW , Hermann helped his father with his daily work. The two recognized the need for agricultural equipment and in 1928 dared to build a motorized grass mower. In the 1930s, the tugs were equipped with seat cushions from Fritzmeier . It quickly became apparent that they needed more power for greater traction and heavier weight for improved traction. In 1930 they developed the first large diesel engine with six hp and a ZF transmission. A total of four diesel horses of this type had been built by 1932 and could even be sold to selected customers. After the death of Johann Georg Fendt, Xaver Fendt returned to Marktoberdorf in 1934 to continue the company with his brother Johann. In 1937 the two entered the Kempten (Allgäu) commercial register under the name "Xaver Fendt & Co., Maschinen- und Schlepperfabrik". Xaver and Hermann became partners, while their mother Kreszentia acted as a limited partner . In 1938 the Fendt brothers built the Dieselross F 22 with up to 22 hp. You were the first manufacturer from Europe to install a drive-independent, powershiftable PTO . This development made them known for the first time beyond the borders of the Allgäu.

On March 2, 1939, Colonel von Schell, who was then authorized representative for motor vehicles, passed the decree on the type limitation in tractor construction. This provided for the tractor construction to be divided into eleven performance classes, in which a distinction is made between main, special and secondary types. Manufacturers of agricultural machinery therefore had clear guidelines on how their vehicles had to be constructed. In the years that followed, the Allgäu company had to overcome further hurdles as a large part of its workforce was drafted into military service. In 1942, the Nazi government banned the construction of tractors with liquid fuel due to the shortage of raw materials. Fendt then designed the Dieselross G25 wood gas tractor, which had a standard generator and Deutz standard gas engine. The Fendt brothers were only able to take over the company again three years after the end of the war, as trustees were appointed by the US military government from 1945 onwards.

Farmer, Favorit, Fix and Co.

In 1950 the Allgäu company was able to produce its 10,000 tractors and by 1951 already had 600 employees. With the F 25 A, the tractor manufacturer had its first all-wheel drive tractor in its range, with which the large tractor market was to be tackled. The strategic decision to no longer purchase transmissions from ZF or Prometheus, but to develop and manufacture transmissions in-house, was an important step for the still young company. With the takeover of H. Sachse KG in 1954, they relocated the development and production of hydraulic power lifts, control valves, lifting cylinders and mower drive units to Kempten (Allgäu) . Two years later, in 1956, the developers presented their first implement carrier , the Fendt GT with 12 HP and underfloor engine, at the DLG traveling exhibition in Cologne . The first narrow-gauge tractor from Fendt followed a year later, the FLS 237 with a vehicle width of only 98 cm. At the end of the 1950s, the medium-sized company was already exporting to 30 countries.

Fendt GT 225 with underfloor engine and 25 hp

Fendt wanted to venture into new markets with the "ff" series, the Favorit 1, Farmer 1 and the Fix 1. They discovered the South American continent as a profitable growth market and opened Tractors Fendt SA there in 1957. Initially, they wanted to convince Brazilian farmers with their own sales office near São Paulo , and later with their own production facility. However, the project was sold twelve years later to Schuler do Brasil, a subsidiary of L. Schuler AG from Göppingen, because the company did not prove to be profitable.

In 1960 the Farmer 2 with 34 hp and the Favorit 2 with 46 hp were presented. A year later the 100,000. Fendt, a Fendt Farmer 2, often referred to as the “Golden Fendt”, produces. At the same time, the F 225 GT with 25 hp appeared on the scene. At that time, the Fendt implement carriers made up around a fifth of the total number of tractors produced in Marktoberdorf. The implement carrier family has been expanded again to include the 30 HP F230 and the 32 HP F 231. In the 1960s, the Fendt GTs had a share of around 87 percent on the system tractor market in West Germany . In 1967 the most powerful Fendt to date, the 62 hp Favorit 3S, was again presented as a tractor for large farms.

The years 1970 to 1995

Fendt Favorit 622 LS - Only 22 pieces rolled off the line

In 1970, the self-propelled loading wagon Agrobil S was presented at the DLG exhibition in Cologne . In the same year the machine factory Josef Dechentreiter with 800 employees in Asbach-Bäumenheim was acquired. Fendt therefore also produced and sold snow groomers and caravans . In the years that followed, the implement carriers and tractor series were further optimized and new markets such as B. Turkey opened up. The Asbach-Bäumenheim plant now also produced the cabins itself. At the same time, the new large tractor series was presented with the Favorit 622 LS.

In the 1970s, Fendt manufactured various backhoe loader models for use in the construction industry. We also worked closely with the construction machinery manufacturer Frisch at times. For example, Frisch took over the sale of some of the Fendt backhoe loaders. In addition, in the mid-1970s, Frisch bought parts from tractor production and used them to build a compact grader.

In 1980 it was decided to change the name to Fendt GmbH in order to meet the contemporary requirements of a commercial enterprise. The company was then a corporation with an advisory board . The plant in Kempten (Allgäu) was spun off from the company and continuously listed as a sister company. A year later, the Favorit 626 LSA, also known as "Coati", was presented. The 50:50 weight distribution, 252 hp and the tilting cab were unique to this tractor. In 1985, Fendt achieved first place in the registration statistics for West Germany for the first time, with 6,388 tractors sold and a market share of 18.4 percent. Xaver Fendt, co-founder of the company, died on June 19, 1989 at the age of 82. His shares in the limited partnership and the GmbH went to his two sons Xaver and Hermann.

Fendt Xylon 524

After the reunification of Germany , new market opportunities arose in the new federal states as well as in Central and Eastern Europe in the early 1990s. In order to reduce costs, production was geared towards order-related manufacturing . This method saves storage costs for production-relevant parts. In 1993 Fendt presented the Favorit 500 C, the first tractor with a sprung front axle. On the occasion of the first Fendt Saaten Union field day at Gut Möschenfeld near Munich, the Xylon was shown in action for the first time in 1994. The system tug, built in a block construction, was available with 110, 120 and 140 hp. Hermann Fendt died on August 17, 1995 at the age of 84, leaving behind three heirs. He did not see how the Favorit 926 was presented at Agritechnica in Hanover in 1995 . The Favorit 926 was the first series-production tractor with a continuously variable transmission, the so-called Vario transmission.

Takeover by the AGCO Group

In 1996 the five heirs of Xaver and Hermann Fendt decided to sell the family business. At the end of January 1997, they transferred all of Fendt's shares to AGCO, a company founded in the USA in 1990, which had already bought international agricultural machinery and tractor manufacturers on several occasions. Fendt GmbH was incorporated into the group's multi-brand strategy. The Baumheim mobile home division was sold in 1998 to the Hobby-Wohnwagenwerk Ing. Harald Striewski GmbH. The Baumheim site is still used today for the production of cabs and body parts. At the Fendt Saaten Union Field Day in Wadenbrunn in 1998, the Fendt combine harvesters were presented for the first time . They were manufactured by the AGCO subsidiary Dronningborg from Randers in Denmark. Fendt combine harvesters have been produced in Breganze , Italy, since 2004 . The factory was originally known for the production of Laverda harvesting technology. Square balers , manufactured in Hesston, USA, have been part of the Fendt product range since 2002. The Kempten machine factory, which was previously responsible for power lifts and electrical control valves in the Fendt models, was sold to the Nussbaum Group in 2003. Towards the end of 2004, production of the Fendt GT and the Xylon system tractor presented in 1994 were discontinued. Around 62,000 of the implement carriers, which had been built for 48 years, had been produced. The Vario transmission has been available in every Fendt tractor series since 2009. At the same time, AGCO announced that it would invest 300 million US dollars in the infrastructure of the Marktoberdorf and Asbach-Bäumenheim locations by 2012 . The construction of the tractor group, with a production capacity of up to 20,000 tractors and 29,000 Vario transmissions per year, and the new customer center, Fendt Forum, were completed by 2013. The Hohenmölsen plant in Saxony-Anhalt has been producing thick sheet metal components since 2009 and the Fendt Katana 65 forage harvester since 2010 . In July 2014, at the international press conference at Neuschwanstein Castle, the new 300 Vario and 700 Vario as well as the new top-of-the-range Fendt 1000 Vario with up to 500 hp and at Agritechnica 2015 products for the forage harvest that Fendt procures from its sister company Fella .

In the image barometer published annually by the DLG , in which German contractors and farmers are asked about agricultural engineering companies, Fendt took first place in 2013 with 99.3 out of 100 possible points. In the following years, Fendt took first place several times in the Image Barometer survey, as it was most recently in 2019. In addition, Fendt landed in first place in the European dealer satisfaction barometer in 2019. This is created by the dealer organization CLIMMAR, with specialist dealers from 10 European countries being surveyed. The company is a member of the VDMA , agricultural engineering division.

Current series

Tractors

The tractors of the Fendt brand are available in different variants. In the higher series there are the Power, Profi- and ProfiPlus versions, which differ in their technical equipment and comfort features. Every Fendt tractor has had the continuously variable Vario transmission since 2009. The transmission is a hydrostatic- mechanical power split drive. With increased speed, the proportion of mechanical energy in the planetary gear increases. The planetary gear makes it possible to mix both hydrostatic, steplessly driven shafts and direct mechanical drives as required. The hydrostats, which can be swiveled by 45 degrees, as well as the operating pressure of up to 550 bar ensure high efficiency. Each tractor can also be equipped with the Tractor Management System (TMS). The system coordinates the engine speed and the gearbox depending on the power requirement.

Crawler tractors

Fendt 900 Vario MT
Fendt 900 Vario MT with a cultivator and rear hopper from Amazone

The Fendt 900 Vario MT was designed and developed directly as a pure crawler tractor. The wheelbase has been lengthened by 13 cm to 2,565 mm compared to the previous version. The floor contact area is 16,120 cm² for 25 "wide treadmills. For 30" it is 19,350 cm² and for 34 "it is 21,930 cm². That means: more traction , less ground pressure , over the entire contact area, even with heavy pulls. The new Fendt VarioDrive drive train from the standard Fendt 1000 Vario tractor has been adapted for the Fendt 900 Vario MT. This means that the Fendt 900 Vario MT travels continuously with power split in a speed range from 20 meters per hour to 40 km / h, without gear changes. The crawler tractor has a seven cylinder engine from AGCO Power . From a displacement of 9.8 l, the engine develops up to 317 kW (431 hp) at a rated speed of 1,700 rpm. The maximum torque of 1921 Nm is between 1300 and 1500 rpm thanks to the Fendt iD low-speed concept. The engine speed range is between 1000 and 1700 rpm. When idling, the engine rotates at 800 rpm. The suspension concept of the Fendt 900 Vario MT consists of four elements: an air-sprung driver's seat, a mechanical 2-point cab suspension, the SmartRide primary suspension and the revised drive with ConstantGrip suspension. ConstantGrip: The three middle rollers are installed in the drive frame via a pendulum suspension (bogie in bogie). As a result, the rollers adapt to the ground contours in the field and when driving on the road, distribute the weight evenly over the entire treadmill surface and maximize the contact area in the field. SmartRide: The central carrier for the drives is connected to the chassis via a newly developed suspension. This suspension consists of different components:

  • Coil springs with integrated dampers
  • additional hydraulic shock absorbers for cushioning during rebound
  • Hydro shock absorbers and spring pads guarantee the suspension behavior during rebound and limit the spring deflection
  • the torsion bar stabilizer gives the chassis lateral stability.

The Fendt 1100 MT is powered by a 12-cylinder diesel engine from AGCO Power. It has 16.8 l displacement and is available with a maximum output of 362 to 475 kW. The V12 delivers high torque and is insensitive to engine droop. The MTS chassis is a longitudinal construction with rubber treadmills that are driven by friction instead of chain wheels and guide teeth. The drive wheels on the rear axle drive the treadmills and have a large diameter to increase the contact area between the wheel and the treadmill and to prevent the treadmill from slipping. The front idlers tension the treadmills by pushing forward against their inner surface. Thanks to the suspension system integrated in the MTS, both drives can adapt to the ground contours independently of each other. The pendulum suspended rollers press the treadmill to the ground in order to keep the contact area as large as possible. The power is transmitted via a full powershift transmission with 16 forward and 4 reverse gears.

Autonomy and electrification

Fendt X Concept

In 2013, Fendt presented the first results with the Fendt X Concept project with a Fendt tractor which, in addition to the hydraulic connections and the PTO shaft, also had a high-voltage interface. The X Concept, based on the Fendt 700 Vario series, is powered by a 147 kW / 200 PS AGCO Power 4-cylinder diesel engine and has an integrated high-performance generator. The electrical output of the high-voltage interfaces in the rear and front of up to 130 kW is transmitted to the devices with a direct voltage of 700 V via the so-called power bus . The power bus also supplies internal tractor consumers, such as B. the electric fan drive or coolant pumps. Due to the power bus architecture, any number of drives on the device can be operated with one socket.

Fendt Former 12555 X

At Agritechnica 2015, Fendt presented the Fendt Former 12555 X rotary rake, which supplies electricity via an AEF (Agricultural Industry Electronics Foundation) specified 700 V DC interface and has an electrical integral drive for each rotary rotor. For the Fendt Former 12555 X, Fendt developed a torque motor with excellent efficiency that is integrated in every swather bell. Separate housings, bearings or gears are not necessary for this. Each motor is controlled independently by its own power electronics. The Fendt Former 12555 X is a four-rotor swather with a working width of 12.50 m, four rotors and twelve double tines.

Fendt Xaver

Fendt Xaver robot unit

In 2015, Fendt started the EU-funded research project MARS (Mobile Agricultural Robot Swarms) together with the Ulm University of Applied Sciences. The use of autonomous robots in the satellite-supported sowing of maize was investigated. After completing the research project, Fendt decided in 2017 to further develop the field robots to readiness for series production. The robot units were named after the founder of the Fendt company: Xaver. The robot units are transported to their place of use with a logistics unit. From there, they carry out the sowing independently and with high precision and enable the site-specific adaptation of the seed pattern and seed strength as well as the exact documentation of each seed with the help of an app. The approach of the new system is to plan, execute, monitor and precisely document the precise sowing of maize with small robotic units working in swarms and with the help of a cloud-based system control. Satellite navigation and data management in the cloud enable you to work around the clock with permanent access to all data. A Fendt robot system, for example, consists of 6 units and achieves an area performance of around 1 ha / h. A Fendt Xaver robot unit has a battery-operated, electric drive and weighs around 50 kg.

Fendt e100 Vario

Fendt e100 Vario

With the Fendt e100 Vario, Fendt is introducing the first practical, battery-electric tractor with 50 kW drive power that can work for up to five hours in partial load operation. The energy source is a 700 V lithium-ion high-performance battery with a capacity of around 100 kWh. Up to 22 kW can be charged with DC voltage via a standardized CEE yard socket or via a supercharging option. With a standardized CCS type 2 plug, the charging time is up to 80 percent in 40 minutes. In addition, the electric motor can be used to recover energy during operation. The electric tractor is equipped with two AEF-compliant power interfaces for electrical implements. There is both a standard PTO connection and the usual hydraulic supply for attachments. The Fendt e100 Vario will be used in limited numbers for the first time in 2018 on selected farms and in municipalities. The Fendt e100 Vario was further developed and improved through municipal tests including winter service and presented at Agritechnica 2019. The special feature of the new generation is the simplified charging technology for the battery. Since DC fast charging sockets Supercharger have not yet established themselves on farms , the new e100 Vario was equipped with a type 2 charging socket and a charging cable for 400 volt sockets. The battery is still available as a DC quick charge function.

Bicycle and e-bike

Fendt had already produced a bicycle with cardan drive in the 1980s. The company Fendt E-Motoren GmbH was founded in 2014. Two years later the drive was ready for series production. At first, the drive, designed as a mid-engine, was only built into the Tororider brand. Today the motor can also be found on other e-bikes, but overall it is rather rare.
