The DLG Food Test Center in Frankfurt am Main tests around 27,000 foods from Germany and abroad every year. These include a. Bread and baked goods, beer, wine, meat products and dairy products. The food is mainly sensory tested according to the DLG 5-point scheme, i.e. assessed according to appearance, smell, taste and consistency. Packaging and labeling tests as well as preparation tests for ready meals are mandatory. Depending on the product group, laboratory tests are compulsory or carried out on a random basis: animal species analysis for meat products (random samples); Extract, alcohol and original wort content in beer (mandatory); Acid and sugar content in fruit drinks (mandatory). In contrast to the Stiftung Warentest , the products are not tested for harmful substances, but are usually tested repeatedly every year. After the test, the manufacturers receive a finding that contains information on improving product quality. Products that “do not deviate from quality expectations” receive the top grade “gold”. Almost all tested foods (80% to 95%) achieve a gold, silver or bronze award. The results have been published on a dedicated website since November 2012. Products that fail the tests will not be published.

Critics consider the award to be of little informative value, as the seal is based on voluntariness, the ingredients and companies themselves are not evaluated and an award merely means that a product does not have any defects. Accordingly, the trustworthiness of the seal u. a. questioned by consumer politicians. A product receives a gold medal if it meets all test criteria. Products that show several minor deviations in various test criteria or a larger deviation in one test criterion receive a silver or bronze medal.

Agricultural and municipal technology

The aim of the DLG was and is to make technological progress available to local farmers.

In the DLG test center "Technology and Operating Resources" in Groß-Umstadt , agricultural and municipal technology as well as agricultural operating resources are subjected to intensive practical tests and assessed according to their practical suitability. The test reports are available for download on the Internet.

The certificate was awarded to companies that demonstrated "above-average quality, environmental and customer orientation" in their production methods, facilities and the presentation of their products. According to the DLG, this was "a comprehensive, overall company award for quality-conscious wineries and winegrowers' cooperatives, from the beginning of production through all phases that accompany the production process to the finished product and its marketing."
