As malt beer refers to various beers from malt , which is characterized by a dark color and low alcohol content identification.

• Top-fermented malt beer with the addition of sugar , sugar syrup and sugar couleur is also known as sweet beer , in the Federal Republic of Germany also as a malt drink since 1958
• Top-fermented malt beer without added sugar, but with the addition of roasted malt is also known as top-fermented nutrient beer "Bavarian brewing style"
• Bottom-fermented malt beer is also known as double caramel

The understanding of what kind of drink this beer is about differs greatly depending on the time, regional and legal aspects. “Malt beer” as a product group under heading 2203 of the Combined Nomenclature is not generally equated with malt beer.
