Doppelcaramel (also Doppelkaramel ) was a German full beer type with sugar until 1990 .

The drink was developed in the GDR in the 1950s and is now mainly brewed in the new federal states . It is a bottom-fermented beer that belongs to the group of malt beers (alcohol-free) or so-called nutrient beers (low alcohol content).

Double caramel contains an average of 11% original wort and an average alcohol content of 1.2% vol. The color is dark and cloudy due to the raw material, as it is not clarified.

For the production, a brew with roasted and caramel malt is made, which is then diluted with water and fermented. Then invert sugar and caramel are added to the mixture , the result is bottled and pasteurized after a phase of bottle fermentation .

In the 21st century , double caramel is brewed in the Schlossbrauerei Schwarzbach, the Hartmannsdorf brewery and the Sternburg brewery Leipzig. Please note that not all " double caramel " versions offered there are traditional double caramel versions . There are also versions of the former cult beer, which, like the malt drink , are declared with an alcohol content of <0.5%. In these varieties, fermentation, similar to a malt drink, was not permitted, which meant that no alcohol or natural carbonic acid could arise. Double caramel is therefore not a protected name for a beer variant.

Trivia

According to TGL 7764, colors were assigned to the beer types in the GDR for identification purposes. The labels from Doppelcaramel had to have a blue content of at least 50%.
