Hohenmölsen is a town in the Burgenland district in the south of Saxony-Anhalt . Until 1994 it was the seat of the Hohenmölsen district of the same name .
geography
The city is located around 15 kilometers southeast of Weißenfels on a hill. The Rippach , a tributary of the Saale, flows at the western development boundary . Their surroundings are shaped on the one hand by agriculture and on the other hand by lignite mining. The Profen opencast mine east of the city is still in operation. The next larger cities are Weißenfels, Zeitz in the south and Leipzig in the northeast.
history
In 1080 Hohenmölsen was the scene of the Battle of Hohenmölsen . In 1091 the Burgward "Melsin villa" (Milzin) was first mentioned in a document. In 1284 the city received market rights. The Reformation began in Hohenmölsen in 1539 . Large city fires in 1558 and 1578 almost completely destroyed the city.
From the beginning of the 19th century, lignite mining began in the Hohenmölsen area , initially using tunnels that were driven into the seam on valley slopes , for example in Wählitz . After the founding of the GDR , lignite mining in the Central German mining area reached a new dimension. Neighboring towns of Hohenmölsen, such as Mutschau , Köttichau , Döbris , Queisau , Steingrimma , Dobergast , were devastated and then completely dredged over. For the resettlement of a large part of the inhabitants of these villages, the new districts of Hohenmölsen-Süd and Hohenmölsen-Nord were created, so that the population of the city rose significantly from the beginning of the 1950s.
From 1952 to 1994 Hohenmölsen was the district town of the Hohenmölsen district . During the GDR era there was a district office of the Ministry for State Security ( MfS ) in the city , which, among other things, collected information about the opposition pastor Oskar Brüsewitz .

Culture and sights
The center of Hohenmölsen is essentially characterized by three buildings: the church tower, the water tower and the tower of the Hohenmölsen town hall . The city is therefore also called the “city of three towers”. The symbol of Hohenmölsen is Aesop's fable The Fox and the Stork . It can be found in various representations in the city: as a narrow relief image on the east side of the town hall tower (below the platform), as an Altmarkt fountain sculpture by Joachim Hering and on lanterns in the city center lighting.

Hohenmölsen can be easily reached on the federal highways 91 and 176 , as well as the federal motorway 9 with the Weißenfels junction. The Groß Korbetha – Deuben railway via Pörsten and Hohenmölsen has been without passenger traffic since 1999. It is still used for coal transports from the Profen lignite mining area from Wählitz to Korbetha for the Schkopau power plant . Public facilities
The Asklepios district hospital was an important economic factor in the 1990s . Until the final closure in April 2008, the Hohenmölsen hospital housed the diabetology department of the Asklepios hospital in Weißenfels . In September 2009 a demolition of the vacant building complex could be prevented. So far, there have been no interested parties for possible further use.
