Icy Mondsee

The Mondsee is about 1.2 kilometers long and on average 200 to 300 meters wide lake in the southeast of Saxony-Anhalt , about three kilometers southeast of Hohenmölsen and ten kilometers northwest of Zeitz . Seen from the air, the lake resembles a light crescent moon, which is how it got its name.

The lake that was created in the early 1990s in the course of recultivation measures is now the center of the Pirkau amusement park , to which u. a. include a campsite, a restaurant, a playground, a circular hiking trail and a parking lot. On the east and south-east side there is an 800 meter long sandy beach and a water slide. The Mondsee lies in the middle of the partly still active lignite opencast mine Profen , but is now surrounded by meadows and young forests, so that little reminds of the old "lunar landscape" of earlier days.
